Bariatric Surgery Opinions

I am about to undergo Bariatric Surgery, however I am conflicted on which type to have. Options are Bypass and Sleeve, I am inclined on the Bypass but Dr. wants to do sleeve. Please give me opinions as I have to decide by Monday since I am scheduled for surgery on Tuesday. I've researched pro's and con's for both options and I still do not know if I should do as the dr. wants or do what I was first leaning toward. Thanx :o)

You sure cutting up your body is the best option? It's not too late to do things right. After Tuesday, that may change.

My opinion as an RN is that if you must do bariatric surgery, then you should choose the gastric Sleeve surgery. There are far less complications (i.e dumping syndrome) than the Roux en-Y procedure. Also, you have better absorption of nutrients and you can actually take medications with sleeve that you can't with the bypass, such as NSAIDs. Just my 2 cents

A distant relative of mine had the gastric bypass about 10 years ago. She lost half her weight. She went from morbidly obese to just chubby. She looked much better after the surgery. But she traded one addiction (food) for another (alcohol). She became an alcoholic a few years after the surgery. Initially, a few years after the surgery, she stuck to eating less, taking her vitamins, avoiding fatty foods, but later she wasn't as strict with her habits. Her pouch expanded to accommodate the extra food she was eating. She gained some of the weight back, not all of it though. If I were you, I'd make sure to follow through on counseling or support groups afterwards to help you stay on track. Good luck!

I would do what the doctor recommended but if I had any misgivings, I'd consult another doctor.

The only real reason not to do sleeve that my surgeon brought up was if you have acid issues. Mine says I can go either way and I'm also more inclined towards RNY, as it's more effective and more commonly done.
