Calories used while walking

Hi everyone,
This is my first post. I'm a little confused. On the my fitness pal app, it says that I've used 724 calories walking 45 minutes. When I I out my information into online calculators for calories used, I'm only getting about 200.
Why is there such a discrepancy and which is right ?
I'm assuming the app is wrong as it seems an awful lot of calories to use while walking 2.5 mph...
This is now making me question everything that I've used the app for, maybe it has been giving me false information all along ??
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Hi - 200 sounds about right (it depends on bodyweight), logging 45 mins of walking at 2.5mph on the mfp website gives around 200 cals.

Depends on your height and weight and speed of walking. Even 200 sounds extremely inflated for only 45 minutes of walking.

    Was there any running/jogging involved?
    Powerwalking?
    Hills?
    Wind conditions?

    Heart rate monitor is best.

There was an issue recently with some of the walking entries giving really high calorie burns but I thought it was fixed.
Go with the 200 number and manually change the number on MFP. There is no way 724 is correct.

    Heart rate monitor is best.

And weight, and gender, and fitness level, hence why a heart rate monitor can better estimate the number of calories burned.

For reference, walking around my neighborhood (hilly), as a ~250 lb male, I might burn ~400 in 45 minutes. 700? Either you're much bigger than me, walking up a steep hill, or something's off.
  • Walking at a leisurely to brisk pace, 5000 steps will burn 200 calories.

MFP only has one option for walking up hill at 3.5 mph. OP said they chose 2.5mph, so whether there were hills or not should not affect the number MFP gave.
