Losing My Pants

For the last three weeks my size 36 pants don't fit right. The belt bunches up the waist and the cuffs bunch up around my shoes. I've been sporting quite the hobo look.

Although I'm happy about the weigh loss and feeling great, I don't feel very confident with my loose fitting clothes. My dilemma is that I'm planning to loss another 10-15 lbs so I don't want to waste money on new clothes that won't fit in a few months.

Lucky for me I was going through some old clothes that I out grew several years ago and found three size 34 pants that fit perfectly. But I still need some dress pants for work.

What have you been doing for clothes during this interim period when your clothes don't fit? Your suggestions are welcome.

Merry Christmas!

I wear my pants up really high with a belt... hahahahahha! But seriously, I do recommend you have ONE pair of jeans that fits you okay for those moments you want to look extra good. Most shirts still fit me, but i've been lucky to find some stuff to wear out of the box I put away b/c everything was too small.

Luckily there is an awesome chain of thrift stores run by the LDS church here, so you can get very well cared for donated clothing and buy it for very cheap. I bought 2 sweaters (1 name brand) and 2 pairs of designer jeans for $26.

You do have to get over the fact that they are secondhand, but I guess I'm free like that, lol.
  • I've also been rocking the cinched in belted look. But people started asking me if everything was o.k. healthwise so I found some cheap pants on sale. There may be some deals in the post Christmas week.

I was thrilled to find that I was an even smaller size than I had thought (14 down to a 10). I want to lose more too so I looked for new ones with belt loops or lots of lycra.

I also find that my yoga pants are fitting well and will do as plain black casual pants as a substitute for jeans. They may even pass for dress pants in a pinch. Lycra is your friend.

I know some people here who say they are shopping at Thrift stores until they get to their goal weight.

Check and see if there are consignment shops in your area. Sometimes you'll find brand new items that have never been worn in these stores.

For some reason "Pants on the ground" popped into my head. Could be because I am in Minnesota.

I'm sporting the "poop droop"...almost lost my pants the other day at work, very embarassing...i'm also wearing long shirts to hide the fact that my pants don't fit...I'm thinking I'm going to have to hit up the Value Village soon and get some more dress pants...I won't buy new until I'm maintaining
  • I bought two pairs of dress pants on sale, and one pair of jeans. Also happened to have some 10s I'd saved from before that fit (down from a size 12). My budget is limited but I'm too impatient to browse thrift stores so I bought on sale.

First Of all Congrats on your success!! I go to the thrift stores it's cheap and you can always donate the big clothes and the ones that get too big later for someone else. GOOD LUCK!!

    Merry Christmas!!
  • You can sew darts in the belt line and tuck that extra 2-4 inches inside the waist. It's not hard to do...I'm a guy and I accomplished this. It saved all my 36 pants from Goodwill....but be warned...I am about to go to 30" pants and you cannot get 6" to hide very well at that point.

Go check out some of the after Christmas sales! Old Navy has tons of $5 items right now and JCPenney and Kohl's always have AMAZING sales the week after Christmas... you could probably grab yourself a few pair for under $50 that will last you through the interim!

I hit like a marshalls, or a tj maxx or something on the cheaper side, just pants to hold me over about 10-20 bucks to get me through.

I'm having this issue too.. I have to go to court on the 29th then again on jan 5 and I don't want to have to buy one pair of pants for two court dates.. i'm looking to borrow from a friend right now, because i don't want to spend money on pants that will only fit right for a few weeks.
  • I've been going to thrift stores to look for clothes. I hate putting a lot of money into clothes when I know that I may not wear them long. You could also try asking on Freecycle if your area has one.

Buy 1 or 2 pairs of cheap pants during the crazy holiday sales - Should be able to find something insanely marked down just after Christmas for 15$-$25. Totally worth it to boost your confidence and tide you over until you reach your goals. You deserve it, Jake!

If you have a Goodwill store in your area, you can buy used clothes cheap. Sometime you'll even find stuff with the original tags on them. It's a great way to stretch your wardrobe dollars until you reach your goal weight.

i'm really into fashion and looking my best, so the idea that i would look like crap in baggy clothes for months was pretty horrific to me. i don't make very much money, so i'm setting aside a little money every month to be able to get some nice pieces when i reach my goal, but that leaves no money for interim clothing. HOWEVER, i've always had trouble letting old clothes go, so i decided to really go through every piece of clothing in my closet, and the interim wardrobe was right there. i had 5 piles going: the too-big stuff for goodwill, stuff that was almost too-big that i could get away with for a couple more weeks, pants i didn't even realize fit again, pants that almost fit again, and finally, an outfit from 5 years ago that includes my favorite skinny black jeans that is my goal to fit back into. once i saw all the possibilities my closet had to offer, it became this fun motivational game i could play.

I wore them until they were falling off. And/or with a belt. Then the belt got too big!! I, too, found some old pants, then they got too small!!! This was good!! I could take them on and off without unzipping! I finally had a goal of loosing so much by a certain time, and before that last pound came off I happened to try on some that were on sale because I was curious about how low I could go. I was SO PLEASED at how low I could go I bought three :) They were work or casual looking. So that's the only 3 pants that fit me now! Actually, they are getting loose..... glad I only bought 3!

Many clearance sales are cheaper than even the donation centers resale shops. So I've been keeping an eye on the clearance racks. I've gotten $3 shirts, etc... But always trying hard not to buy more than a couple in case I shrink!

I forgot one more thing! I used to buy pants that might have room if I get bigger. Or sit and see if they are still comfortable. Or consider if they will shrink and buy UP. Don't do that if you are still shrinking! Buy DOWN a little. They should be snug or a little uncomfortably tight if you are paying for a good pair. A goal pair! If they are cheap, go with something just a little snug.

I'm a big fan of "G&W Men's Wear" more commonly known as Goodwill! I just went through the same thing, quickly got down to a 34 much faster than i anticipated. I gave in and went buy a couple of pairs of new jeans from Ross Dress for Less, 2 pairs for $40 wasn't too much for me.
Congrats on the "pants on the ground"!
  • I've been learning to sew, and have had some old pants taken in at a local alteration shop. it helps with not having to buy new pants every time I lose a few inches. and it only costs $5 a item to have it altered. that might help you with your delema. and it'll help a local business in your area.

if i were you, i would stop by a consignment store and by some just for work, that way your not spending all your money on clothes that wont fit for very long. craigslist is also a great source for used clothes :)

I have a Goodwill OUTLET near my house where they sell clothing by the pound for about $1.64. It's been great to find smaller, high-end clothes for cheap while I got down to my goal weight.

    Congrats on your success!

That's worked for me. I'm already starting to shrink out of the pants I got last month, but it will be a little while before I have to have them altered.
  • I have found some wonderful deals at local thrift stores, consignment shops, and Goodwills.
