Losing Too Fast

I have been tracking religiously for the past two weeks and I've lost a total of 14 lbs in that time. I always read about losing too fast and how unhealthy it is. How do I slow it down? I'm eating between 1200-1500 calories a day. I do work out, but only 3-4 times a week. Sometimes it's only walking a couple of miles. Obviously I'm happy to have lost the 14 lbs, but I want it to stay away. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

    Don't panic, and keep track.

Chances are, if you started your healthy lifestyle all at once, that you lost a significant amount of water weight that your body was retaining. The heavier you are, the more water weight you lose initially. Some people also experience a big "whoosh" in the beginning of their weight loss journey and it slows or even plateaus from there. I'm sure there's a scientific reason behind that, but I think of it as an initial shock reaction before your body gets used to the new way of doing things.

If your weight continues to drop this quickly, it could be cause for concern. Pay attention to your body and make sure you are not suffering from hunger pains, dizziness, or fatigue as that could be a sign you're not eating enough. If your workouts feel more difficult without being more intense, that's a red flag.

Nothing specific really. I just try to make sure I get in a lot of fruits and veggies and stick to lean protein. I usually have a light breakfast of Greek yogurt and fruit, salad with protein for lunch and dinner just varies. Most of my calories go toward dinner. I snack throughout the day as well.

One pound is approximately 3500 calories (keeping in mind that a body is not a closed system). Two weeks, 14 pounds. A pound a day. A pound a day? There's no way you're burning 3500 calories in defecit per day unless you are doing intense excercise for hours and hours and not eating, realistically. It's water weight mostly. Reducing salt intake, sweating, eating and drinking foods less likely to cause bloating and water retention... You're fine, it's chill.

Most people have a huge loss the first month or so due to water weight, glycogen stores and just normal body flux. Give it a month...it will slow down.

    Okay. Thanks everyone.
  • The only time I lost a pound a day was when I was doing really low carb - 20-30 carbs a day. I could eat all I wanted and still lose (of course though, I gained it all back). Just an idea (and only based on what I experienced), but could you be eating too low carb?

I lost 11 the first two weeks and then went to a pretty steady 1-2 lbs and week. I'm at 1200 too, I work out 6 days a week, but I have a lot more to lose than you so was nice to have that first big loss that motivated me. Sounds like you are eating healthy. It will slow, but heck you are almost to your goal. Before you know it, you'll be trying to figure out how to mainain!

prob a lot is water. I lost 6 lbs in my first week. I'm in week 11 now, and am down an additional 9 lbs. My point is, it will slow down.

That said, you could easily add some calories if you'd like to lose slower. Even sticking to 1500 would change that, and honestly you'd probably feel better. I know I feel better doing 1500 than I did averaging 1350.
  • As one looses weight, does this program change automatically as to how many calories you should take in? I have been at it for a week now and I feel awesome thus far! I am at a 1250 calorie intake!
