Bursitis and squats

I have frequent flare-ups of bursitis in my knee (fluid filled sac gets inflamed). This happens when I am doing something out of my routine, from wearing heels to running uphill too long. Should I just avoid squats completely? Or is there anyone out there who has the same problems but has been able to do squats?

  • I've done that kind of thing before, treat it real well until it feels better, but it always seems to flare up again. It takes only a little unusual stimuli to get irritated, unlike before my injury a couple years ago, before which I did not have any problems. I don't know if this is some underlying condition, or if I'm just getting old at 24.

I just found out I have Iliopsoas Bursitis, I'm only 29 and this has been going on for at least 5 years. I recently put on 25 lbs and this has aggravated things but I also tend to swing out at one hip more than the other and overstretch one leg, and I need to wear insoles because my feet are slightly flat, one flatter than the other on the side that's giving me grief with my bursitis... I do a lot of squats and as long as I wear Dr Scholls arch support in my shoes and make sure I have correct form, squats haven't given me any problems. Hope this helps.
