I blew my day :(

Yesterday, I went shopping out shopping with my boyfriend, and since we had a coupon for Chipotle (BOGO burrito), we decided to save some money and stop there for dinner. Unfortunately, I thought what I got wouldn't be terrible, since I wasn't planning on eating the tortilla (coupon didn't count for the bowl)...but I did anyway. The veggie burrito I got amounted to about 900 calories. Didn't look it up until afterwards, so I'm mad at myself. Then I had the "well, this day is shot" mentality and got froyo with unhealthy toppings afterwards. I'm so mad that I did that.

And then today, I still had that mentality, so instead of walking the mile to work and the mile home, I took the bus and now I only have 150 calories left for dinner because I decided to track everything today and start over.

I really wish I hadn't given up...I feel like I just slowed down my progress for the week. Uuuggh! I need some support today :(

You need to stop thinking about weight loss as a day-to-day thing. Weight loss happens over a long period of time. Weekly calorie goals are better/easier to stick with than daily calorie goals. Log everything as accurately as you can and move on. Tomorrow is another day, don't let this stretch into a week of "..well I blew it!"

Do you have an unrealistically low calorie goal?

eat your dinner like you normally would, log everything, and remember tomorrow is a new day. that's all you can do. if you tell yourself you can never have something or cut all the good stuff out, you're not likely to stick with it.

That's not saying you can do it all the time, but one or two days is a drop in the bucket in the long run. i personally have chipotle at least once a month. i don't stress over it and i don't eat tiny meals to make up for it. i just eat it. i love it and would say f this if i couldn't have my burritos :p

The day isn't "blown" and your dinner wasn't horrible last night but it's information for the future. Often times "veggie" options are actually higher in calories and fats (not always) because there's usually added flavor through sauces and cheeses. You still have time today to get in a good walk, if you can take the bus back and forth then you must be able to walk locally or find an area neighborhood.
This is always a way to try something new, look up a video online and do some yoga or some floor exercises, there are options out there that will help you feel better about your day.

You don't drown by falling in the water; you drown by staying there.

Maybe today wasn't good, but log it and move on. Focus on getting back on track tomorrow. You may have "blown' today, but one day isn't a big deal as long as it's not happening all the time.

Get up, dust yourself off, chin up, and keep going!

I tracked everything today so far as a refresh from yesterday...although I didn't really care until I got home. The problem yesterday wasn't the ingredients, but rather the quantity. But yes, definitely information for the future! I love my mexican food (as commercial as Chipotle may be...still delicious!), so instead of rice, I'll sub lettuce and nix the tortilla.

I'm a horrible person when I'm hungry, and I didn't eat breakfast, so I went crazy at lunch.

My calorie goals are reasonable for me, and it's usually not a problem at all. I just didn't look up the nutrition info beforehand yesterday and got mad at myself afterwards when I did. And I also should have just walked - I only live about 1.25 miles away from work, so a 20 minute walk is usually relaxing, but I got discouraged today. Tomorrow is a new day, though!

I felt bad about it mostly because when I put on my jeans today, they felt a lot roomier, so after feeling some of the weight loss results, it reminded me of the hard work I've been doing lately. Now I'm back in sweats working the rest of the day at home. (I teach at the uni...thank god for morning classes)
  • I wouldn't totally sweat it. It happens. Today I am already (-) 18 calories and I haven't even had dinner. My last 24 hours has been very hard on me and I rarely got any sleep last night. One of my favorite friendships had to come to an end againest my choice or desire and it made me so sick to my stomach that I yet to process this. Today is a wash for me. I am working until 7pm then headed home to go in the red more, with red wine and meaningless television...

We all have our days of utter dispair and regret. I only hope to awake tomorrow feeling like I'm not going to burst into tears at the drop of a hat (whatever the heck that expression means)...

    Feel better!

I wouldn't sweat it. I eat Chipoltle about once a week. It's one of the more reasonable places IMO to eat out and still get some good food for the calorie intake. The bowl I get is 950 in calories, but I always have uneaten calories at the end of the day so it's no big deal. I keep close tabs on my input, so I always know what I can and can't do before hand.

  • No biggie. Happens to the best of us. Maybe count the day as a "cheat" day and move on. We all have those days. :)

    Me, too!!

OP: It really isn't as bad as you think. I know I'm late to this party so you've had dinner by now. When that sort of thing happens to me I usually just have something like a Lean Cuisine and a can of green beans (lots of volume for filling me up, without a ton of calories) for dinner, then log everything and wake up tomorrow. it you only end up going over by a couple hundred or so, it's NOT going to ruin your efforts for the week. Just be more mindful the next time you eat out and check stuff before you order (or order it anyway and save half for dinner later.)

You will be fine... 'stop the bleeding', as they say, and get back on track as of your very next meal. Don't let it take over and spiral out of control. You can do this.

This! I think the most important thing to stress here is that one bad meal (or day) does not undo all your hard work. However, letting one bad day derail your progress for a week or a month or two could undo your work. You ate more than you thought, no big deal. Start over tomorrow and get your walks in. You can do this!

No worries. It's only a day. This isn't a race, so there's nothing lost :-)

Firstly, this is sort of off topic but I've never seen a bogo coupon for chipotle that can't be used on your choice of burrito, bowl, salad or tacos. And you can get a bowl & burrito and still use the bogo. (Sorry, I work at Chipotle so my chipotle radar went off) Also as a side note, I've lost nearly 50 lbs while eating chipotle almost every day for the past year, so it's totally possible to get a meal that won't do you in. :)

Anyway, yes! This is such a terrible trap our minds get us in to. "I already failed so it doesn't matter if I screw up more, the day is already shot". Nope! One failure doesn't derail your entire day, week, month or year. You mess up, you acknowledge it, you let it go and move on as if you didn't screw up.

Try not to let it get to you. I know that's pretty weak advice considering how hard you and I'm sure everyone else on here has worked to increase their fitness and health, but these other members are right, everyone has their bad days, and one bad day isn't going to make the previous weeks of work worthless.

No giving up. Every day is a new day. Start over tomorrow and keep on moving. Sometimes we all have bad days, weeks and even months in my case in the past! Just keep on trying.

Wasn't Chipotle and froyo dinner? What do you mean you only have 150 cals left?! You aren't full? lol
Or did you mean to say the Chipotle and froyo were lunch...? OR that you went into Chipotle for dinner only having 150 calories to use...?

Either way, you didn't derail your progress. Just like weight loss, weight gain takes regularly repeated habits. Going over your calorie limit for the day is just a metabolism boost and you can start over tomorrow.

It can actually be good to have days like this every once in a while because it's a change for your body so it won't go into plateau mode. I say log it and keep moving forward.

Just make sure your "cheat day" isn't going *too* far over. I've heard of people going 3,000-6,000+ over their daily limit: they went crazy and had big meals and dessert at a restaurant and some of those dishes are extremely high in calories. That can really mess people up for weeks to earn enough exercise points to work that one meal off. I would stay away from the highest calorie foods and check the numbers at home before leaving.

Cheat days should not be too often either. I heard it should be about once a week. Treat yourself and go over just a little.

I also like the idea of weekly limits instead of daily limits because then you can try to go under or on target most of the week and then treat day can be a little over.

If you know you'll be going out, have light snacks as the other meals so you're not starving but you're not going to go too far over your daily limit. Make sure you plan in a longer workout as well.

And avoid high calorie drinks while you're out. So many people drink so many calories and they don't even realize it.
