I don't really have time to eat in the morning and sometimes for lunch so I was wondering would it be fine to have a protein shake as a meal replacement once during the day?
I was thinking about buying %100 Whey Gold Double Rich Chocolate protein powder and blending it with a banana and some rolled oats.
Has anyone ever tried this?
I'm trying to lose about 15 pounds
I exercise for about an hour a day.

Meal replacement shakes aren't the best way to get nutrition, but it's better than nothing. You don't need to eat breakfast - fasting can actually be beneficial. But if you're getting hungry then it's a good idea to keep something to hand. You could always do a smoothie, adding in more fruits and veg for nutrients and then some protein powder, so like you suggest, just get more nutrients in there.
If you're working out on an empty stomach keep it short in duration and low intensity. Anything more and you'll need to fuel your workouts to prevent muscle loss and excess cortisol production.0 -
Maybe you can prepare something in the evening, that you can grab in the morning.0

I eat food I take in about 1,900 calories a day but sometimes when I leave for school I don't really have time to eat anything or I forget. That's why I was asking if having a protein shake sometimes would be fine.0 -

Of course it would be fine. Do whatever works for you. However real food is better then drinking your calories. I would second the suggestion made by Tizia93. You could do that most days but still have some shakes here and then if for whatever you reason you were unable to meal prep.
Or as was said earlier, get up a bit earlier.0 -
I used to do that, a sugar-free protein shake (Muscle Milk) for breakfast because it was convenient. Since you are eating nutritious dinners, and if you log all of the macros for the shake and they help you fill your nutrition needs, then it seems like an acceptable solution, as is the other suggestion (make something ahead the night before).0

I'm a bit confused. Are you planning on pre preparing the rolled oats OP?
Technically you can eat them as is (dependant on type). But you'll probably find them; A) very chewy in a protein shake If you eat them this way daily you are probably going to end up very constipated.
If you are pre preparing them. Why not boil up a cpl of eggs at the same time? Something you can grab on the go quickly.0 -

LOL Of course you do. This guy is a troll. Skipping meals is actually not as bad as we have been taught to think. Some people do very well practicing IF (Infermittent Fasting). I am one of them, but I'm not starving myself because I still eat the recommended amount of daily calories, I just eat them within a smaller window of time. The only negative side effect may be a bit of hunger in the beginning, but that subsides after a week or two. And it works!0 -

Why shouldn't you eat oats without preparing them? Why would they make you constipated? They're high in fibre so I'm confused by this claim. I eat raw oats every day and have none of the problems you allude to....quite the opposite in fact!0 -

As i already responded to this message by the OP, you have clearly demonstrated that you do not understand the concept of a "troll". The OP's original message stated that she forgot breakfast and often lunch. She made no indication of her daily caloric intake. I may have been incorrect in inferring that she was not eating enough but my comment was not meant to incite any type of reaction or cause an argument. I was simply short and sweet with my words. Oops! Yes, sorry I had meant to include the word 'suddenly' prior to eat. As in if the OP increases the volume of fiber into their diet without ensuring they drink enough fluids. It could potentially cause them the opposite effect to the usual consumption of fiber for a few days.0 -

Well I should have said that in the mornings I don't really like to eat anything because I can never seem to hold anything down. I'm not a food person for the mornings. So when I wake up I have to rush out the door so it would be easier to have some sort of drink that would take about 3 min. to make.
I was curious if anyone else uses protein shakes as a meal replacement because I keep hearing different things about them.

OP, plenty of people do smoothies for breakfast so I don't think it's an issue. But you may want to look up smoothie recipes. I'm not sure a banana with some protein powder and oatmeal is going to be enough to keep you going for very long. Maybe add in some veggies and/or other fruits and greek yogurt?
Another idea is to make up big batches of stuff on the weekends. This is what I do and it saves me a lot of time and money. I make a big batch of steel cut oats in the crockpot with apples, sweet potato and pecans. And I make a breakfast casserole with eggs, spinach, feta, pepperoni and hashbrowns. Both are filling and all I have to do is throw a portion into a container and throw it in my lunch bag and I'm out the door. I don't even reheat the oatmeal when I eat it - perfectly good cold.0 -

You could make a smoothie using any of these ingredients: fresh or frozen fruit, a handful or two of spinach or kale, coconut water, yogurt, almond milk, flax seeds, chia seeds, hemp seeds, flax oil...and the list goes on. If you want to up the calories then add some protein powder.
Smoothies are quick if you have the ingredients prepared.
It doesn't really matter when you eat but if you are going all day without eating then you must be pretty hungry by the time you have a meal. If breakfast isn't your thing, just toss some portable food in your back pack and eat mid morning or at lunch time.0 -
I never have breakfast. If I do I end up hungry again by like 10, 11 o clock so end up eating crap. If I don't I keep going until lunchtime. I did a meal replacement diet for a few weeks and it worked quite well, was absolutely starving most of the time though, and it's so expensive!0

I put raw oats in my shakes all the time. My gym even offers them as an addition to a shake. You don't even notice them. It is better if you drink with a straw because they tend to settle to the bottom, but I'll just eat the last mouthful if I have to.
OP - if it works for you, great. There is nothing "wrong" with shakes for breakfast if it doesn't leave you starving again shortly after. you can add tons of things like avocado for fat, peanut butter, bananas, different seeds like chia seeds.
My favourite with oats is chocolate protein, peanut butter and oats. You can throw in a banana. That's more of post gym shake for me but if it works as breakfast, go for it.0 -
Solid food, liquid food, no difference based just on consistency. If you want a little intake in the morning and a meal replacement is easier than prepping and eating a meal, then try it. Alternately, you could also just grab a glass of milk or a latte. It will just be a fraction of your total intake for the day, no 200 calories is make or break, and there is no perfect food or perfect meal, you just want your overall intake to be diverse enough to get you all your macro and micro nutrients.0

I use protein drinks and premade drinks when I can when I have to go to school because I leave the house by six in the morning and all my prep for getting my bag ready and me ready leaves me just enough time to make something to take with me on top of the drink. I usually use the drink for my 5 hour block class because it keeps my hunger at bay for the longest period of a few hours. And I tend to eat my food if I bring any during my second class, but usually by my second class of the day it is so damn hot out I don't want to eat.
Meal replacement drinks and shakes are great every once in a while, but they don't work for everyone. Sometimes you can be even hungrier because of not looking at sugar content and other times you just can't stand the taste so it was a waste of money. It takes a lot to find a protein powder that works for you.
Do you drink coffee? If you do you could purchase a chocolate or vanilla protein powder, put some in your coffee and then make another protein powder drink. It gets in extra amounts of protein to keep hunger at bay and chocolate/vanilla tastes really good in coffee. Though for the coffee route I'd recommend LES Lean 15 protein, not a ton of calories so it doesn't weigh your coffee down and it makes it creamy.0 -
I put the ingredients for a smoothie in the blender at night. I pull it from the fridge in the morning. Whip it up and drink it while I am getting ready to go.0

I'm still confused. What about sudden fibre increase could cause constipation? Bloating, yes. Gas, maybe. But constipation? I don't see how.
ETA: I note you mention fluid... I assume the OP wasn't eating the oats dry? Whatever you mix them with will be sufficient liquid.0 -
