Scale Games

I usually weigh myself every day, first thing in the morning, just once - and record that number for the day (I keep an Excel log). This morning I decided to test my Aria scale and weighed myself four times within 10 minutes and got four different results with a 2-lb. spread. Which number would *you* use? The first number, or the lowest number? Fitbit records the last weigh in, which happened to be the lowest number this morning...

I'd think your scales are very out of whack if you got 4 different readings within a 10min window. Changes in weight can fluctuate a lot during the day. But 10mins wouldn't make a difference. Are you moving your scales around then getting a different reading? Scales should be moved as little as possible as it disrupts the balance mechanism.

I'd take something you know the weight (for example a 2lbs sugar bag or something).
Weigh yourself. Take the bag in your hands and weigh yourself again. Weigh yourself again without the bag.
All of this with the same clothes/naked and without moving the scale of course.
If your scale didn't give you proper differences, it isn't calibrated correctly and therefore not trustworthy.

I would look into either re-calibrating the scale, if possible, or consider buying a new scale (if you want/need to weigh yourself). A scale that differs so much won't help you much.

My mechanical scale is more consistent (but doesn't sync online, doesn't give me the same motivational feedback). It also gives me a reading 2 lbs. higher than the Aria on most days. I have 40 lbs. to lose so I'm not terribly concerned about such a small fluctuation. But at $129 I would expect an accurate weight measurement.

My $20 scale from Bed Bath and Beyond only varies if I stand unbalanced and it takes a reading before I've centered my weight over the scale. Is it possible that your feet are in a different position/you're leaning/one of the scale feet is in a crack in the tile floor? Are you measuring on carpet? Are you inhaling for one of the readings vs exhailing? Could you be swinging your arms? Some of those things may affect scale readings.

You may need to have it recalibrated if you measure something with a known weight (like a handweight) and it still comes up with different wrights.
