Hey all,

Looking to start a exciting journey of health and fitness. Based on what I know from my past, I can't do this on my own. Without a doubt this road will have its ups and downs. Any insights on nutrition and exercise would be much appreciated. My long term plan is to pay it forward with everything people have taught me.

Anyways, here are my stats and my goals

Current weight - 226 lbs
Current waist - 40"
Goal weight - 145 lbs
Goal waist - 32"
I also plan on running a half marathon on May 1, 2011, and God willing, and full marathon on October 9, 2011

To be quite honest, I don't know when exactly I'll reach my weight/waist goal, but I'm aiming for Dec 1, 2011.

Anybody have experience running half marathons and full marathons? Any tips on trying to lose weight while training for long distance running events? Any feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks much.

  • You can do it! I started running for the first time in Sept. I've ran two 5K's and one 8K so far. I was set back by a knee injury but have continued non-impact exercise. I'm just now getting back into running. You're starting on the right path by setting goals and looking for accountability. My advice-plan,plan, and more planning! Plan your meals, your exercise, and always keep snacks on hand so you don't reach for the bad stuff. My reccomendation...Kashi bars and a small square of dark chocolate for your sweet cravings.
  • I joined a "running" program at my local Y when I was about your weight. They encouraged a lot of stretching and I would jog/shuffle as far as I could then speed walk until I felt able to "shuffle" again. We went around the same road course twice a week and I would try to set a goal of reaching a little farther on each "shuffle" segment. (Using local landmarks) I got up to a mile of being able to jog w/o stopping to walk within a month or so. I felt AWESOME. Unfortunately my progress was interrupted by a family member getting colon cancer and the whole family upheaval caused me to drop the program. I do know it is do-able and is well worth the effort. I would do the program again if the opportunity came again.
My advice, just set small goals and enjoy the endorphins! I LOVED jogging. I still do many 5 K walks, but my knees give me trouble lately so I need to work my way back up to the jog/running.

I'm signing up for my first 5k in years too. It's great motivation! :)

I was an avid distance runner in high school and my first year of college. I miss it.

    Good luck to you!
