Walking calories burned

So I entered 80 minutes walking at 4 mph because that is what I did...it said I burned like 630 calories which seems quite high. Is this right

MFP seems to aim high when it calculates calories. I always eat back half, just in case there's an error. You may want to buy a HRM so you have an accurate number.

I would say that seems a little high. I usually deduct the estimates on MFP by 25% which would come up to 472, which seems a little closer. Best bet would be to get a heart rate monitor to make sure you are not over-estimating your calories burned - especially if you plan on eating them back.

Not really that high though. I burned nearly 1000 walking two hours and that was my HRM

The average is 75 calories per mile walked, 100 per mile running. Heavier people will burn more. People who have done lots of cardio and are super efficient will burn less. I'm right around those numbers per my HRM.

The only way to be sure is to use a HRM. But walking is one of the areas of cardio that MFP estimates somewhat accurately. Walking at 4mph is a pretty quick pace. And you spend almost an hour and a half doing it. I would say it's not that high of an estimate, but you can just eat back half to be careful.

It really depends on your weight. If you weigh more, you burn more.

Lighter people that dispute the higher burn, go walk an hour carrying 50 lbs and get back to me

Like others have said, I record about 75% of the actual time so as not to over estimate. 60 minutes real = 45 minutes recorded.

Ok, I adjusted it to 500. It is a bit above 75 percent but I was carrying a backpack with my work clothes and shoes in it so it seems about right.

It's all about estimated guesses but that sounds very solid to me!
