Scared of the scales!!

I lost 18lb doing MFP and am scared I have it all back on. I worked really hard. However, during the Xmas break I fell off the wagon. I am the only person in my family who struggles with my weight and during Xmas was surrounded by slim female family members ridiculing me for trying to eat sensibly during Xmas. Consequently, i over indulged and feel really guilty and fat. So now, I am home, clothes feeling a bit more snug and staring at the scales actually scared of what they might say...

Well all you can do is find out what the damage is and get right back on track! Do not let that scale intimidate you! Get on it, it might not be as bad as you think. And then get back in the game babe! Good luck!!!

sorry you didn't get any family support. good news is that's over and now it's up to you! deep breath, let it go and focus on what you know works. stop beating yourself up and go for it--push fluids and keep moving with your exercise. you have to be really stubborn, get mad, whatever works--fight on!

It is okay! There is no way that you gained back an entire 18 pounds. If you gained back any weight it is still okay. Since you realize that you struggled during this time (like most of us did) just use it as motivation to refocus and lose more weight! Go ahead...get on the scale....

I jumped on the scale the morning after I got back from my mini-vacation. It was actually up less than I expected, but I also know that probably 1/2 of my "gain" is water retention due to high sodium and not enough water. Better to know what you're dealing with than assume the worst...just hop on! :flowerforyou:

give yourself a day or two before you look at the scale...i too overate over the holiday weekend and made the mistake of looking at the scale and it wasn't what i wanted to see...i think at least a little is and will be water weight so i am not letting myself stress too much...eat healthy, get in some good workouts, and drink lots of water the next few days and then weigh in early next week...a little gain is kinda natural, what makes the difference is how you react to it...don't give up!!! :)

    1) Plenty of people gained over Christmas- if you did too, it's not a big deal. But the only way to deal with it is to be totally honest with yourself- which starts with stepping on the scale for a normal weigh in. If you put on lbs, its not the end of the world- Christmas is out of the way and regular routine is just around the corner.

    2) Stop letting people bully you into overeating- my bestfriend has ALWAYS made little jokes about me "being a wimp' when I dont finish takeout or one of our other overindulgences. It's always been good natured and no big deal, but when I started losing weight, I prefaced every meal with "I'm totally going to be a wimp today buuut....". Similarly, my mom makes jokes about how little I put on my plate, and I just use a joke line like "I do wut I want" (silly voice included). You don't have to be confrontational - you can stay light and still make your point-- but the next time you are around your fam and they start pushing you, just don't give in.

"No matter how the wind howls, the mountain cannot bow to it." That's right I just quoted Mulan at ya! :-)

PS good strategy for holiday eating- get in a solid workout, filling breakfast and choose ahead of time which goodies you are going to focus on- and pre enter those into your diary, so you can see what kind of cals you have left to work with once you indulge in what you want most.
  • OMGoose! Where are you hiding in my house?? I swear you just recapped my life over the last week or two! I actually lost 25 lbs a couple of months ago via MFP but for some unknown reason decided I didn't need to continue here. I weighed myself this morning and logged it... now it says I've only lost 17 lbs. A minor setback considering the way I've been eating since November! Ya know, sometimes I just have to say oh well, pull up my fat-girl panties, and keep going. We messed up, but now we can start again. Don't be afraid and don't beat yourself up! It'll all work out! :)
  • Like everyone else said, most is probably water retention due to Sodium intake. Just drink a bunch of water and flush your system out and get back on track and the scale will go back down! No harm no foul!!!! Trust me we all do it... ALSO you are starting a new year and a new healthy way of life....Then the scale won't bother you!

Thanks for the hints and tips :flowerforyou:
It's been really helpful. I think my plan of action is to drink plenty of water like many people have suggested and step on the dreaded scales in a few days to see the damage.
All your support and help has been great
    Thanks

I'm really sorry your family is not more supportive of your efforts. That can really suck the joy out of being together. But now, get right back on the wagon and start chugging along again. You can do it!
