Where do you workout at? Me and my husband are debating a gym membership so I thought I would get a second opion. Which one do you workout at home or gym and how much have you lost?

I prefer working out at home. I can workout whenever I want that way-and no one will be there to watch me. Also, when I did belong to a gym-I always had an excuse not to go. This way...it is in my living room-so there is no excuse.0

I prefer home. I am more motivated to do it and it gives me a great way to burn stress with adding the pressure of knowing I have to drive somewhere else. My highest weight wast 196 and I have lost 30 lbs since that point. I have lost 7 since being on here.0

It depends on your personality I guess. We used to pay for a membership at the YMCA...and when we didn't go, it literally ate me up inside that I was paying for something and I wasn't using it. But I hated going and seeing all those buff guys and gals walking around while pudgy me was trying to do a little cardio. I enjoy working out in my living room at my own pace and when it is convenient for me. My husband and my children do not judge me and many times join in!0

I did p90x at home and i also have a gym membership and train for my marathons outside at the near-by park. From my assortment of environments, I get the best work outs (calories burned, goals accomplished, work-out highs) when others are there working out also. For this reason I recommend getting the gym membership. A good gym will have group fitness classes, cardio and strength machines, and lots of means of support. This is the best way to keep up the healthy lifestyle...having others to hold you accountable. At home you are more likely to slack off and not stick with it! Best of luck!0

I prefer the gym.....I think you need to ge tout of your comfrot zone to really go all out!!0

I prefer the gym myself. I find that at home there's too many other things to do and I just dont bother, where as at the gym there's only one reason to be there and so I get on with it.0

I don't really have time to fit actual gym going into my day, so I work out at home. It's hard enough to get up early as it is, without adding additional travel time to get there, park, walk in, get situated, and then get started.
That being said, there are many people who find excuses not to work out at home and find the "get your money's worth" approach motivating. Plus, it's a lot easier to get a wide range of activity at a gym, I expect, because you don't have to purchase and house the machines and such. I don't have room for a pool!0 -
My boyfriend just bought a condo and we use the 3rd bedroom as our gym. We have a full body weight system plus he installed a TV with DVD player for workout videos. I split my time between home and the gym. There are certain things I dont have at home (elliptical, bike, fitness classes) that I enjoy at the gym, but for the days I cant get there, there is no excuse to not exercise in my own gym :-)0

I work out a the gym down the street from my house. I'm a mother of two, and working out at home just wasn't working for me. I'd always have something I'd rather be doing than working out. Going to the gym helps me, bc they have a day care for the kids, and I do a lot of the fitness group classes, because it seems to be easier to work out for me, if Im in a group. Also, switching between the different classes and running on the treadmill, keeps things fresh and interesting for me. I havent really lost any weight, rather, I pick up a lot of muscle weight, so I can't gauge my results that way. I play roller derby, so working out just keeps adding more pounds to me and the other girls in my sport.0

I prefer the gym until we have the money for a good home gym. Strength training is just as important as cardio and without a weight machine at home there are a lot of exercises we just can't do.0
-
I prefer home. The process of getting ready to go to the gym, driving there, committing to stay there, and then driving home always overwhelms me. LOL! That's just me though.0

Well, I can only post my intentions here, as I am just starting out. I just joined Planet Fitness and am still designing my schedule. I attend a weekly yoga class and try to walk with walking poles. I am planning mainly to use the gym for strength training on the weekends and perhaps one weekend night. I tend to do better if I join something; I'm a huge procrastinator.0

At home......I would never go to the gym, it would be wasted money. I have a treadmill at home, so its great to be able to get on it whenever I want....I also have the Xbox kinect with EA sports active 2, that is a great workout!0

I do it at home...our gym (the only one within 30 miles) doesnt have a daycare so I probably would never get a workout in.plus having to "get ready" to go workout is just stupid but something I'd probably do. so I find it easier at home. you just have to be committed and make time for it and not let the house work be your excuse! i've lost 50 lbs exercising at home this year so i dont see the need for a pricey membership0

I have lost all of my weight at home, mostly walking and using Leslie Sansone & Jillian Michaels DVDs and biking when the weather is right for it. For Christmas, we got an XBOX360 with Kinect and Biggest Loser & Zumba Fitness games that I am excited to integrate into my routine.
I've always wanted a gym membership so I can take classes (Zumba, Pilates, etc!) and run on the treadmill or use the elliptical, but I just can't afford it yet.0 -
I like a mixture of both I did do most of my workouts at home up until an aerobic studio opened near me. The price was right, lots of classes so I joined up. I now teach there (didn't see that coming lol).
I would see about doing a guest pass while you are considering0 -
No gym in this small town... I work out at home. But even if one was available, I think its easier to workout at home. Especially in the winter, when its cold, and the roads aren't always great. My rule is, if I'm going to watch TV, I better be pedalling the bike at the same time.0

I worked out a lot at home doing Turbo Jam and Jillian's 30 Day Shred but I also have a gym membership. I use a trainer once in a while, it is good when killing time and if I know I will be lazy as soon as I get home, I try to go to the gym first. The great part about working out at home is there is no excuse, you can do it any time of the day.0

I've lost 48 lbs and all at home. I started in July so in the nicer weather I walked, biked and jogged a lil bit. Now that it's colder, I've been doing my elliptical and just added Jillian Michaels 30 day shred. Good luck to you guys!0

I work out at home! And I call it my gym...
I can't see paying money to a real gym knowing myself the way I do - I am too self conscious about working out in front of people right now and would never go. So it would be like tossing money into the wind. Maybe when I've reached a weight I feel comfortable at but possibly never cuz I am really liking working out at home!0 -
I workout at home, so far lost about 82lbs. I for one cannot justify paying for something when I can get for free. The way I see it, for the price of a membership, gas for the car ($1.18/liter), that's a lot of money. For what? So I can spend most of my time on an elliptical? So basically, that eats up about 2-3 hours of my day. Not to mention, if you decide to take your kids with you, you have to take extra time getting them in the car, dropping them off at the in gym daycare, then before you leave, getting them all dressed etc. again. I don't know about you, but I have 4 kids and it takes at least 20 minutes getting them ready and into the car. By the time you stop and think about it, you could have been done a decent workout at home in half the time.
You could always start out at home, and pay yourself a gym membership fee, to go towards some gym equipment....for me $45/month adds up quickly.
Just my POV0 -
I've done both. Working out at the gym works better for me. But, as you can see from the varied replies, you'll just have to weigh your options and see what works for you.
I started out with home equipment. It worked out good for me for a while. I added a gym membership so I could work out with a friend. He moved away, and I ended up dropping the gym membership and just working out at home. I found, however, that I was always distracted when working out at home. I eventually sold my equipment and signed up at another gym, and that's what I'm doing now.
I've found that if I can just make myself put on my gym shorts and get in the car, just that little bit, I can go and have a good workout even if I'm feeling tired or lazy. When I was working out at home, it just seemed way too easy to get tired and quit without doing as much as I wanted to.
I used to feel self-conscious at the gym. Now, I plug in my isolation headphones (I can't even hear anyone else talking when I have them on! LOL The other guys at the gym literally have to tap me on the shoulder to ask if I'm done with some equipment or something), crank my music up, and get in "the zone.". I get kinda "tunnel vision" when I'm at the gym. I can almost completely tune out the whole rest of the world, and it almost feels like I'm at the gym all by myself. Personally, I could *never* get that amount of focus at home, with the kids and the ringing telephone and all the other distractions.0 -
I do both - we got a great deal with fitness first at work _ £10 a month worldwide membership, and then at home I do my DVD's and the trampoline. I also walk, swim and cycle (weather permitting)0
-
I do a mix of bootcamps and home and signing up for races. The bootcamps and races get me to push harder, but home keeps me consistent. Can't come up with many excuses not to use my elliptical or weights or dvds in my house.
Also, for whatever reason in a giant gym setting I'm not comfortable or something and I tend to do the minimum and get out of there...weird.0 -
I do both, but I prefer working out at a gym where I don't work. At home, the husband and kids interrupt me too often. At the gym where I work, my clients and other members interrupt me to ask questions or schedule sessions. At a gym where nobody knows me, I can get a good hard workout in with no distractions. But I'm the type to get my best workouts when I put my earphones in and ignore the world so I can focus. A lot of my clients prefer home workouts so that they don't feel like they are on display. Others prefer group exercise classes so that they can workout with their friends and be social. I've made a lot of really good friends at the gym (where I work, not my hardcore workout one), so it can be a great social place too. Just depends on your personality and what you like when you workout.0

I have done both and right now, I prefer working out at home. I have invested in a few sets of free weights, one of those squishy floors and have a little "gym" set up in my basement. It is removed from the rest of the house, so there is no interuptions. I did purchase a gym membership for the winter to use the treadmills there to run. But that is the only time I go there! I was really surprised. I also found that the people at the gym were as fit as the people in my dvd's!!! It is more motivating to do my dvd's!0

Whatever you will DO is the best investment. I have two memberships (one at the YMCA for water aerobics and spinning and another at a dance studio for tap/jazz/ballet and other aerobics/dance type classes). They're worth the money because I love the different classes and couldn't have it all without both memberships.
There are a ton of other activities I genuinely love that don't require a membership. In nicer weather, I'm constantly walking and riding my bike. I love to roller skate and pay $7 to attend open skate every few weeks. I have some exercise DVDs that are super fun and I look forward to doing. Just Dance and Zumba for wii are a blast!
Do what you love and you will be successful because you will actually DO something if you love it.
YOU CAN DO IT!!!

I do both - I'll go to the gym for the equipment and at home I'll do workout DVDs with dumbbells, kettlebells, or run outside when it's nice (using mapmyrun.com and my heart rate monitor). I like to do the weird jumping, intense cardio, circuit training in the comfort of my own home - mainly so I don't look like an idiot at the gym. The gym I reserve for treadmill, elliptical, bike, and machine weights :P
It depends what you HAVE at home. If you have a home gym and DVDs, then I would say don't bother with a gym membership. However, if you don't have anything at home, I would recommend joining one, or a local rec center with a fitness room if its cheaper. Gyms and rec centers also have GREAT classes, which is great for motivation, accountability, and even making friends!0 -
I prefer working out at home. I can workout whenever I want that way-and no one will be there to watch me. Also, when I did belong to a gym-I always had an excuse not to go. This way...it is in my living room-so there is no excuse.
See that is funny..I only work out at home when it is too cold to go for a run and I just can't get to the gym...I prefer the gym because there are time constraints and I do better when I have to schedule things and I am sure to work my hardest if people are watching.....you will not ever catch me dogging it at the gym...LOL...I don't care if I have make up on or if my hair is crazy but you will see me working hard.
It all depends on what motivates you, does the energy of a gym inspire you or make you feel self conscious...do you like to do it quick and be done or do you like your workout to be an event in the day (I love my workout so it is an event) This is a one answer does not fit all kind of thing0
