My brain is a random negative thought generator. How do I become more positive?

I don't know how serious you are about this post. I had a smartass answer ready to go then I thought better of it.

Cognitive therapy is a good place to start. There is a book called "Feeling Good - the New Mood Therapy" by David Burns that can help. He teaches you how to talk back to the negative thoughts that cause depression. I worked for me.

Having said that, I'll say this: Dark sarcasm is an art form and true masters are very difficult to find. :drinker:

Try thinking about someone you really love. Negative thoughts come from negative feelings and it's impossible to feel bad if you think about someone--even something you love. After that, it's just a matter of practice. Anytime you see yourself thinking a negative thought, you just redirect yourself to a more positive one. With time, you'll find yourself going straight to the positive:)

What I did is wrote affirmations and motivational things on my laptop, printed them up in a nice font, and stapled them to the walls of my bedroom. It's helped me think more positively about myself and habits, as well as have a better outlook because I have positive things to read everyday that I came up with.

Write positive things out of your own mind and print them up and look at them every day. It will be like making a new habit. It takes 21-30 tries to make something a habit. So think of it like that.

See, here's the thing... I don't really see anything wrong with a little Dark Sarcasm in the Classroom. Though I also think that maybe the teachers should wait to "leave them kids alone" until AFTER the grammar lesson. Just saying.

Also, don't forget - the Headmaster is promoting an ED: "If you don't eat yer meat, you can't have any pudding. How can you have any pudding if you don't eat yer meat?" That behavior just BEGS for dark sarcasm!!

Well, the Headmaster just wanted the kids to hit their protein macros before indulging in the pudding.

Are the people you're around most often this way too? Maybe you need some new friends. Negativity can be very contagious and habit-forming.
  • Watching funny movies, TV shows, or people can be entertaining and even make you laugh.......pushing aside some or all of the negativity having a party in that brain of yours

Keep it out of the classroom.

Give more value to your doing than your feeling. Many people confuse motivation with desire. Motivation is actually willingness, nothing more and nothing less. You may FEEL that something is pointless, too hard or whatever and that's perfectly fine. The question is are you WILLING to do something. THAT'S motivation.

Side note - have you considered checking to see if you're depressed? It may be worth looking into.

AWWWWWW!! Barney the dinosaur - teaching children not to be afraid of strangers, the color purple, or some of the most vicious creatures (Barney is modeled off of the T. Rex) ever to walk the face of the earth since 1992.

So first off, props to all the self-aware brick in the wall for a wonderful Pink Floyd related discussion =)

Second of all, back to the topic at hand, negative thoughts are something that plagues me from time to time as well, and sometimes it's triggered by events, sometimes it's just my brain going in a downward spiral. When the latter happens, I try to stick to this advice:

    0791_2f7f.png

I know it seems silly, but at some point, I think we become responsible for our moods, and if I am the person in charge, I would rather be awesome, than sad/upset. So if stuck on the dark side of the moon you can do the simple thing of breaking the cycle of negative thoughts and emotions, and switching them to the positive ones. Smile, or try to--the action of smiling improves the mood and demeanor somewhat, even if you don't feel like smiling, look at yourself in the mirror (or don't, if it won' help), and tell yourself the good things about yourself--max out the ego boost to ridiculous levels if you have to. You don't even have to be honest, you just have to fool yourself into thinking that yeah, you are awesome, and handsome, and witty, and deserve all the fame and recognition in the world, and if the world doesn't see it that way, they can go suck it!

Again, it may seem silly, but if it helps break up the negativity, if it brings a smile, or just gives enough motivation to stop the unwanted thoughts and focus on something else, I guess it's good enough.

It's the price of being self aware.
