Doing HIIT on an empty stomach?

I am trying to lose pounds as well as sheer body fat. I am trying to keep my muscle without gaining ANY (seriously, I gain muscle just by looking at weights). I do steady-state cardio (running), but I also want to incorporate HIIT to really burn away fat. I planned to do one day a week of a shorter SSC than I usually do followed by 20min of HIIT. However, I keep reading that HIIT and THEN SSC is most effective. The problem is, I do my SSC in the morning on an empty stomach. This works best for me, really (never tired, never hungry, no upset stomach, etc.). I know it's best to do HIIT with something in my stomach, but I don't want stomach issues and I avoid protein in the morning (for digestion, I eat the longest-digesting, most complex foods later in the day).
Can I do SSC then HIIT, and still have proper effects?
If not, what can I have before HIIT that's adequate fuel but small enough?

I wouldn't do that- I would die- I much prefer doing cardio AFTER my training if I must do it at all- but it really doesn't matter what you do as long as you do something consistently (I.e. eating at a deficit and keeping doing training to maintain muscle mass).0 -
I do HIIT daily in a fasted state. It takes some getting used to, but your body does adjust and - for me - seemed to get into the groove of not using food for fuel and instead tapping into my fat reserves. Try it, worked for me.0

IN for gaining muscle just by looking at weights. *me so jelly*
as for WHETHER you eat...
It's your body. Try it and see how it goes. If you are tired and can't give it the same effort, then try eating a bit before hand.
If you can function fine. Then yay!
As for WHAT to eat...
Again, it's your body. What do you normally eat in the morning that doesn't bother you? Try some of that. If you don't do protein.. then try a slice of toast. maybe add a dash of peanut butter. Or a granola bar.0 -
Can we trade eyeballs? Because I would LOVE to have magic muscle creating peepers. That would be a super cool magic power.
I do HIIT on an empty stomach in the morning. It's hard, but I get barfy if I have to much in my stomach. I just have to make sure to bring a shake with me so I don't hanger murder anyone one the way out the door.0 -

sure okay- to the "seriously I gain muscle just looking at weights"
because that's TOTALLY how it works- forget all that hard work the rest of us have to do.
it's actually REALLY insulting and dismissive to anyone who actually lifts. That is just NOT how this process works.0 -
Did everyone really think I literally meant I gain muscle by actually looking at weights? I just meant I gain it very, very quickly and it never seems to atrophy/decrease.0

We need a *sarcasm* font. You struck a nerve with the people that are working every dang day to build muscle and disprove the "I'll get bulky" myth.0 -

Wow, daily?! Thanks, I'll try it. Good to know it works for you.0 -

Honestly didn't realize people would get so offended by the fact that my body is different. Everyone has different goals and bodies. I would love to not gain so quickly and have to be conscious of my exercises and what they target, but I wouldn't be offended if someone else said they had to work hard.0 -

Mesomorh is a pseudo science. In other words, that doesn't matter. And no. You aren't gaining muscle quickly. You might end up holding some water (especially at the beginning)..but especially at a deficit, no. Even those who get started with heavy lifting or other resistance/strength programs may experience newb gains but that's it.
It is very hard to build/gain muscle, especially for women. So unless you are shooting up steroids and in a bulk phase...no, you don't magically gain muscle fast.0 -

So body types and the ways different bodies respond to exercises isn't real? Are you talking about the term "mesomorph" or the concept in general? I know my body and I have lived with it for many years now, and so yes, I tone up quickly and hold onto muscle. I'm really unsure why this is such a sensitive topic for everyone, when I thought this was a more cohesive community where we celebrated the differences in each other's bodies. I was simply asking for advice and I wasn't speaking from some expert science background. I was giving information about my body as I know it personally, and I gave that information to help people give me better advice. I would love to not gain any muscle, and if possible lose muscle in my thighs. Should I too be offended by people who work hard to get muscle because they have to make a conscious effort to do so while I have to be aware of every exercise I do? If people were offended because of the way I am built...I don't know what to say to that. If people were offended because I used an exaggeration without specifically stating it was an exaggeration...didn't know those were part of the social etiquette rules of MFP. But I truly think it's strange that some would find it insulting that I am asking not to gain muscle because that is not my goal and for me, it is an unfortunate situation while for some, it would be fortunate. We are all different, and to be offended by my difference is very odd.0 -

if your body is that different, then why are you asking the general population for advice on what you should do with your body?
No offense taken here... but yeah... there are many many MANY people on this site who have worked hard to prove to women that you don't get massive by lifting weights. So when someone claims to insta-bulk, many of those women jump on that claim because it is often all that many women new to the fitness cycle need to drop the heavy weights and reach for the pink dumbbells.
Congratulations on having a body that is utterly unique! I think it is awesome that you can easily build and retain a lot of muscle.
If I were you - I'd jump all over that. You could probably make a lot of money if you lowered your body fat and increased your muscle rapidly... you could get sponsors and magazine articles and everything. And maybe even be rich!0 -

If my body is different why am I asking the general population? Can't that question be asked of everyone on this site who has asked a question about their body? If the question: "Why can't I lose weight?" was asked by a 26-year-old, pear-shaped female who has a fast metabolism but is under a lot of stress and et cetera, et cetera, doesn't she have an "utterly unique" and different body as well, so why is she on this site asking that question? Everyone's body here is different, but everyone here is allowed to ask questions to the general population, so asking me why I'm asking this question makes no sense to me.
Also, I never claimed to bulk up. My question wasn't even about muscle gains, it was about doing HIIT! Also, I really can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not by saying I could get sponsors and magazine articles. If not, then thanks. If so, then I don't really know what your problem is. I wish the best for everyone here who has fitness goals - whether they be to gain muscle, lose fat, build endurance, or whatever. I would not be offended by someone saying they lose fat from their thighs first, which is something I would love to do. And so in return, I would want people to appreciate my goals as I do theirs.0 -
You should consider putting your name in for some studies. You could make some serious money. In all the studies I have read, everyone who did extensive strength training (proven best way to retain muscle) has lost muscle with a calorie deficit. Even the ones who eat lots of protein. Even the ones who were previously body builders that have the ability to put muscle on easier then others.
What makes you think it's muscle you gain? I'm assuming you realize that if you gain inches somewhere on a calorie deficit you would have to gain a crap ton of muscle for it to be larger then the fat that was previously there (just looking at weight and volume of fat and muscle). Also you can gain a lot of strength while losing muscle... Figure I'd point that out since since some don't seem to realize that0 -
I do HIIT 4-5 times a week, I have found that if I have a protein bar or shake about 1 1/2 hrs to 2 hrs before the workout then it is much easier to get through it. I find it virtually impossible to do the workout on an empty stomach.0

You can do HIIT in a fed or fasted state, depending on you, your body, your schedule etc... I generally do my workouts first thing in the morning then eat breakfast as I simply am not hungry before hand. If I do eat first, I need at least an hour to digest my food before I can workout.
But, I wouldn't do SSC and then immediately do a HIIT session. In fact, I do HIIT one day, and SS another. I'd suggest to limit HIIT to every other day, at least at first, as it can really take it out of you.
But HIIT cardio will not help you keep muscle. Adequate protein intake and resistance training work best for that (note: I said keeping, not building).0 -

Why do you think HIIT is better with something in your stomach? If I eat within 2 hours of HIIT I'm sick, so I would recommend the opposite!!
Yes I've heard it's better to do HIIT before SSC too, for fat burning anyway. So are you suggesting doing SSC then eating then doing HIIT? Personally I think this sounds like a recipe for disaster!
What's wrong with just doing your HIIT then your SSC after?0 -
HIIT is better for retaining muscle but neither will improve losing fat around the stomach area.. only a calorie deficit can do that.0

Also, when you say you gain muscle easy.. how are you measuring that? Because people commonly confuse fat loss with muscle gains because they see their muscles more.0
