Artificial Sweetners ? Are there carbs in them?

I'll admit it right off the bat, I use WAY too many packets of equal in my coffee and flaxseed meal each day. I have a severe sweet tooth that is only satisfied by this.
However, I've recently done some research on Equal and it turns out there are .89 carbs in a packet of Equal. That means, if I'm using say, 30 packets a day, I'm eating 25+ carbs in just my coffee etc.
On top of the 20g of carbs allowed each day, that would put me at 50+ carbs ! No wonder I'm having a difficult time losing.
Does this make sense to anyone ? And has anyone heard that Truvia truly has no net carbs because it is made of sugar alcohol ?
Side note: If I sound like an idiot, I apologize. I'm just trying to get a straight answer from all the research I've been doing. THANK YOU

By the way, I'm doing Atkins/low carb, so that's why I limit myself to the 20 or so grams per day0

I honestly have 3 Splenda's a day in my Dunk's (caramel flavor added as well), and that's enough sweetness to get me through the day. It may be in your best interest to wean yourself off of the artificial sweeteners.
I don't want to tell you what to do, but 20g of carbs a day seems super low. Unless you have a medical reason for doing low carb, it may be in your benefit to up your carbs a little, especially if you're looking for a lifestyle change. That just seems incredibly restrictive.0 -
How many packs of equal?
  I think I was just a little sick at the thought.
And yeah, everything edible is made up of one of the macros (Carbs, Protein, Fat and 'alcohol') so if it ain't a fat and it ain't a protein...it must have carbs, logically.
I shall refrain from comment on your crazy low carb number. It's too late in the day for that debate.0 -

30..packets? And is there a medical reason for such the low # of carbs allowed? I know that keto diets are designed for those with epilepsy.0 -
OMG, One of those packages makes your coffee super sweet. I have a half a pack of splenda and thats almost too sweat.
But yes. If you eat 30 packs you just times the carbs per pack with the number of packs. 30 * .890 -
30 packets...wow.
I'm just sayin': if you like sweet things that much, mayhaps keto is not the long-term solution you are looking for.0 -

It's Atkins. Super rapid weight loss that once you lost all the weight many people gain it all back.0 -

That didn't work for me, nor did Atkins help me lose any weight or help my mental state out at all. But nevertheless, 30 packets a day is absolutely not Atkins.0 -

When I did Atkins 10 years ago I lost weight very fast. Not healthy at all.0 -
You aren't going to put a dent in your daily calories with artificial sweeteners I wouldn't worry about it. If it is that concerning you can use aspartame as that is a dipeptide, no carbs there.0
-
My only comment is that I use a lot of granulated Splenda: in coffee, on my morning baked apple, on grapefruit. It did not affect my weight loss as far as I can tell and it hasn't affected maintenance either.0

Splenda, exactly the same. All powdered sweetener packets contain maltodextrin filler. Even Truvia.
You can buy liquid sucralose drops online; I use those for tea sometimes. Then again, I also use raw honey from my bees sometimes too, because that's how I roll.0 -

Did I say "splenda"? Did I say "Equal"? I believe i said aspartame, which you can also buy.0 -
30 x 0.89 x 4 = 107 calories per day just from artificial sweetener.0

Also why do you eat so little? Just looking at April and there were many days where you ate 300-800 per day and exercised on top of that. That's much more of a concern than your artificial sweetener consumption.0

That is concerning. Your calorie goal is set to 893?? And some days are around 500 calories. Are you under doctor supervision, OP?0 -

I don't think she actually meant that she used 30 a day. She used it as an example.0 -
For starters there's nothing wrong with carbs they are an essential food and you even need them to help build muscle. You restrict your carbs too much and instead of using the wonderful protein to build and repair muscles it just uses the protein as a primary energy source instead of the carbs. Restricting carbs can help people with specific medical conditions or those with specific fitness goals but as a general rule low carb diets are no more special than any other 'restrictive Diet'. So restricting carbs doesn't overall cause weightloss it's just part of a calorie deficit.
OP Artificial sweeteners is not your problem you just need to eat some food otherwise you will just end up with long term medical problems. If this has been a long term problem I suggest you access appropriate advice for your issues0 -
More importantly - your digestive system doesn't know how to tell the difference between artificial sweet and real sweet.
What do I mean? Well, when you consume artificial sweeteners (or even natural, non-caloric sweeteners like Stevia) you taste buds trigger an insulin response. You consume something sweet, and you body reacts as if that means you need to process some glucose or fructose, even if the stimulus comes via a fake sweetener.
Basically, fake sugar causes your body to behave as if it's preparing to receive real sugar.
There is no physiological benefit to non-caloric sweeteners.

[/quoteI looked up Truvia Web site a long time ago. here is the link to where you can find info. this should take right to the page with Carbohydrate information.
I have used Truvia for everything for several years. It is a natural sweetener It also tells you about the erythriol used and where it comes from.
I swear by Truvia

I do agree with everyone else about your eating. You said you were under a doctors supervision? Does he know how you are eating?0 -

I know I'm going to feel the wrath of this comment but, that's just how much I'm hungry for each day. I have a very stressful job that has be on the go a lot and I eat when I can. Don't worry everyone it's not an eating disorder concern, but in my mind I'm eating less than I'm burning and I'm still not losing weight, so I'm doing something wrong.
Everyone is going to say "eat more", which is fine, I will try to do that, but in the past I've always gained from doing that. I'm literally trying to lose 10 pounds, tops, and can't do it.0 -

I'm not under doctor supervision for my dieting or eating habits, no0 -
If you are eating a really low number of calories / carbs and still aren't looking weight it will be because your body has gone into preservation mode and everything you eat will be turned into fat to prepare for the next long period you will have without eating. Despite what your mind may think, your body does not actually want to lose weight and will do everything it can to maintain it. Eating much more often will increase your metabolism.
Also, I assume the reason you need so much sweetener is because you are drinking lots of coffee since you are tired all the time as a result of having such a restricted diet. Carbs in particular are used to release energy. Also why do you eat so little? Just looking at April and there were many days where you ate 300-800 per day and exercised on top of that. Thank you, this was the answer I was looking for. So, I am taking in wayyyy more calories and carbs than I originally thought0 -

15 calories for a teaspoon of sugar isn't that bad.
And I have never tasted a sugar sub (other than honey, of course, which isn't really a sub) that tasted good in anyway. Ew.0 -

At what intake do you start gaining? And what sort of gain are we talking - like an actual gain over 6 weeks or water weight and glycogen from the sudden increase in calories? If you genuinely don't feel hungry then you need to start overriding your hunger cues with common sense. Your current intake, if accurate (i.e. you weigh food not just estimate), poses serious health risks. Please see a doctor asap.0 -

I'm gaining over 6 weeks and occasional water weight gain as well. In just a few day period my weight will fluctuate between 133 and 143. It's so frustrating, I just want to be at a steady weight. I recently lost about 30 pounds last summer, but now I've gained 10 back and can't lose it again. I'm only 5'4'' and was happy at 125 or so.0
