Sabotage?

Sabotage has to be one of the most overused and often out of context words used on MFP.
I don't lack sympathy for those that struggle with self control, weight issues or poor relationships both with people and food but the use of the word sabotage has seriously gotten out of control.
Apparently everyday innocent events have become acts of sabotage according to a large proportion of threads, case in point here are a few examples of what is now considered sabotage...
Offering somebody food, complimenting someone's current physique before they reach their goal weight, inviting someone to a restaurant that isn't subway, providing food at social events that hasn't been meticulously weighed and portioned out, eating around your significant other, the presence of birthday cake at a birthday (OMG), public holidays, advertising etc etc Dastardly yes?
I could write a much more comprehensive list no doubt and anybody who has been on the threads long enough know what I am talking about.
No doubt some people will read this and sharpen their pitch forks and light the torches exclaiming how I am not being sensitive to those that are not receiving the support they need, and people should accommodate the changes in their lifestyles they have chosen.
Sabotage used to have a different meaning but now it seems to be the replacement for lack of willpower, a scapegoat for poor self-control.
Part of developing good eating habits is learning how to control yourself in real world situations, as you are not vacuum sealed in an underground bunker away from the rest of humanity...hopefully.
Yes we are influenced by the people that surround us and our environment but I would like to think people are committing to more than just strengthening their physical being but also their mental fortitude.
Well here is my take on it, if you are unable to learn to deal with these common real life situations you are bound to fail!
Just because you have made some changes in your life does not mean that others are always going to accommodate them.
Yes it is great to have supportive and understanding spouses and friends but how long are you going to lean on a them as a crutch, best to fly with your own wings
To me real sabotage would be a deliberate attempt at ruining your goals whatever they maybe, yes I imagine in some sad cases things like emotional and physical abuse could exist but 99% of the time the word sabotage is used on the threads this is not the case.
People make it sound like being offered cake at the office is akin to having one of these inserted forcefully...
Now unless people are recalibrating your food scales, letting your tires down before you go to the gym or force feeding you, more often then not they are not sabotaging you they just don't share the same goals.
Try and remember next time somebody offers you your favorite snack it is most probably because they like you, not because this is their secret agenda...
hopefully.
Hmm now I want to listen to some Beastie Boys.

Critics don't really like it, and nobody's going to it. I'd bet it's a decent action flic...

My bad, I posted this in "Chit-Chat, Fun, and Games" it was meant to go in another section like "motivation"0

Yep. Saw this over & over in my head when I saw the title of the thread.0 -
I've used it before... but it was more in a tongue in cheek manner. I know that my co-workers don't secretly conspire to make me fatter by bringing in unhealthy foods for the food table. Sabotage does have a nice 'je ne sais quois' about it though so I used it. And... got some guy to tell me that no one is sabotaging me.0

This still seems like an appropriate area for the thread. All the cool kids come to chit-chat.0

Love this!! Well said.0

Although.... definition number 2 is kind of open to interpretation and could fit someone saying someone is out to sabotage their diet:
sab·o·tage [sab-uh-tahzh, sab-uh-tahzh]
noun
1.
any underhand interference with production, work, etc., in a plant, factory, etc., as by enemy agents during wartime or by employees during a trade dispute.
2.
any undermining of a cause.0 -
It seems difficult for a lot of people to grasp: the *kitten* other people do isn't about us.0

I was thinking about starting this exact thread today!
We really need to start taking personal responsibility for our decisions. There are people who live in all sorts of different conditions with different influences and relationships who are able to do this.
The same goes for people who blame their unhappiness on their surroundings, or on friends or family. There are people out there who live in a country at war, and who see death and destruction daily, and they can find it within themselves to experience happiness.
As long as you believe that other people can control what you feel, you are going to be stuck feeling helpless and out of control.0 -
Good post. :drinker:
Only the person you see in the mirror is responsible for what goes in your mouth and how much exercise you find time to do. It doesn't pay to make your weight loss everyone else's problem.0 -

can anyone who's seen this film tell me if it's any good or not? I like action films but don't want to waste 3BD on a boring one... cause I'm a skinflint lol0 -

awaits for you to educate me on the many uses of flint rock for skinning and hunting no doubt.0 -
BIGGEST. IRK. EVER.
For some reason when those say this person, work, family member "sabotage" me, it ignites an anger I didn't know I could have for a stranger online! LMAO!!!!
No sympathy for people, especially ADULTS, and I use that term loosely, who blame others for their lack of self-control. lol0 -

Last year I could not say no and I was fat. That was no one's fault but mine. Then I learnt to say no, and I got to goal. The more you actually do it, the more the people around you begin to accept it. Nobody at work would dream of bringing me sweet treats now. It took months, but we got there :-)0

 you'd be pretty much right about that lol
yep well it is used for those things.... you have to understand how flint (or similar rock) fractures when hit with a hammerstone (or other impliment e.g. a piece of antler in later stone tool industries) and you can make all kinds of tools with it. the first stone tools were used to butcher up animal carcasses, including smashing up the bones to access brains and marrow.... flint for hunting weapons, e.g. flint blade hafted onto a pointy stick to make a spear came much later, in the middle palaeolithic era... and the use of animal skins as clothing is also middle palaeolithic although they were possibly used to carry stuff in long before they were used as clothes - clothing is only necessary if you live in a cold enough environment to need it... modesty is a very modern concept. Upper palaeolithic flintknapping techniques were so complex and intricate... they had tiny blades for use as arrowheads or the heads of throwing spears, and also made fine bone impliments, e.g bone needles for stitched clothing.0
