Macros/Cals, etc....

Hello everyone. I was hoping to get some feedback.....

I went to see a dietitian a few days ago and we adjusted my macros to be 40% carbs, 30% fat and 30% protein. She said I wasn't getting enough carbs (I had it set lower). Anyway, we were talking about exercise calories, and she said I shouldn't be eating them back. She said if I consume 1400 calories a day and burn let's say 400, it doesn't matter what I'm netting as long as I consumed the 1,400. Doesn't that sound weird to anyone? That means I would only be netting 1,000 calories and that seems REALLY low to me. Any thoughts?

I would get a second opinion from a different dietician.

Netting 1000 calories is way too low, (unless really short) IMO.

I enter and eat back 75ish% of my exercise burns, and aim to net my 2100 calories.

If I were you I would aim to net that 1400 calories and meet my macros.

I don't have much advice, but I'm set at 1450 calories and roughly the same macros and have found that if I drop much below 1200 cal (either from exercise or under-eating) I feel fine for a couple days but wind up with a binge or really weak workouts beyond that. I tend to struggle with getting enough protein, not carbs, though which might account for the weakness. Agreed that a second opinion would be a good idea. If you're even moderately active IIFYM will set you at 1200 + for maintenance calories alone.

This sounds lie something that is taken out of context and is therefore dependent on what the conversation or the situation is about. If you are overweight or obese, you shouldn't eat back those exercise calories because it will only hurt your goals to lose weight. So then it would make sense for a dietician to tell their client to eat sad 1400 calories no matter what. If you are more fit or at least within your BMI, then eating the calories back in part is essential, especially as you get closer to wanting to eat at maintenance. This also depends on your goals and how serious you are about your fitness.

Thanks, guys. I appreciate the responses.

I am 5'5, 188lbs and definitely trying to lose weight. Maybe that's why she said that. It just seems counter productive. I don't want my body to think I'm starving and hold onto the fat I'm trying to lose. I asked her a few times....."so even though I would only be netting 1,000 calories, that's fine? That's safe?" and she kept saying yes, as long as I'm consuming the 1,400. She told me not to pay attention to the net. Maybe I will get another opinion just in case. Thank you!
