So I bought this "Bear Naked" granola. Banana Nut variety. I must admit....I love it. I put a handful in my oatmeal every morning to give it some crunch (I hate the goopy texture). And also in my yogurt.

Does anyone have any reccomendations for a nice HEALTHY, natural ie. minimally processed, granola I could try.

Honestly, unless you go to a health foods store (and even then, that's not ideal), purchased granola is absolutely riddled with sugar & salt.

Why don't you try making your own? You can toast some mixed nuts, and even some bananas to make banana chips, and add whatever fruit you like. I personally like to use birch syrup because it has a low glycemic index to hold it all together but Lyle's golden syrup works really well as well. You can totally control how much sugar you put in this way. If you want clusters, don't overstir the granola and let it cool completely when you take it out of the oven so that when you break it off, it forms clusters.

I am a terrible cook, truly, and I find granola to be pretty easy to make. There's tons of recipes online and the good thing about them is that you can pretty much modify any of them so that your favourite ingredients are in it.
  • Thanks for the suggestion! I'll definitely google some recipes!

As for the salt and sugar, here are the values for Bear Naked:

Serving Size: 1/4c (which is about my handful)

    Calories: 140
    From Fat: 60
    Fat: 7g
    Sat Fat: 2g
    Trans Fat: 0g
    Cholesterol: 0mg
    Sodium: 5mg
    Carb: 18g
    Fiber: 2g
    Sugars: 5g
    Protein: 3g

So i'm pretty happy with that, but we don't have a whole foods store here, just walmart LOL. :D

Bear Naked is about as minimally processed as you can get at Wal-Mart. I love the Banana Nut variety too. I need to get some more of that stuff. ;)

I make my own, too....It's easy, and you can do any variety that you want!

I like Bear Naked as well--Cranberry nut is my granola of choice! It is the best thing going short of hitting the health food store. Eating a handful before a cardio workout gives me a good energy boost.
  • We really need a health food store here. LOL

Where do you find the ingredients?
Again, i'm looking for minimally processed.

I like the Bear Naked granola too.

I use their Bear Naked Fit Vanilla Almond Crunch which I mix with greek no-fat yogurt and fruit for breakfast.

Their Fit version (for serving of 1/4 cup or 30g/1.1oz) is 120 calories, total fat 2.5g, sodium 10mg, total carbohydrates 22g, dietary fiber 2g, sugar 4g, protein 4g.
