When is it fat gain?

Hi! I am so discouraged and just wanting to throw in the towel. Please help me and send some encouragement my way. I always believed that my weight could fluctuate, but I am hitting a wall. I am getting so upset. It is not my TOM, and on Saturday I went to a fair and had some funnel cakes and cotton candy, and ice-cream, but my body has never responded like this. Every morning when I get up to weigh myself it keeps climbing. I have started working out 1-2 times a day (Generally walking and running). I have been binging some… BUT NOT nearly enough to have gained all this weight. I just felt that my water weight would have gone down by now but it is still there. Is this real fat gain? HELP!

That looks like maintenance to me....it is possible that your binges and what not are eroding your calorie deficit to a point where it no longer exists and you're just maintaining.

I would add that eating more carbohydrates than normal and having stuff like cotton candy and fair food is going to further result in you retaining water which can mask any potential loss of fat temporarily.

Really, though, it's only 10 days worth of data which is pretty much nothing when it comes to trend analysis.
  • I have more data, would it be helpful to post it?

It's hard to "know" if you're not tracking your food. And, really, your average here is 121.3. You're up a couple of pounds from that--on a Monday. I'm always up on Monday because I've usually had salty foods or something on the weekend that will cause me to retain water.

Are you trying to lose weight or just maintain? Anyway, if you need to lose, just make sure you're tracking all your food, including the binges. If you keep to a calorie deficit, you'll eventually make it there. Know that it will be slower going for you because you don't have a lot to lose.

*edit* Noticed you had the dates going back from most recent... I do this too around a certain time of the month.

It would be most helpful if you would open your diary. Hard to help when no one can see what you are eating. Also, maybe try not weighing yourself so much. How tall are you? Depending on your height the weight seems healthy to me.

If you are "losing" and "gaining" the same 3-5 Lbs routinely over a prolonged period of time, you are maintaining. That's what maintenance looks like, it is not a static number.

I would also note that I do not know your stats, but that weight seems totally fine for the average female...it is quite possible that you really don't have weight to lose. Do you have any idea what your BF% is?
  • I am at 25% body fat. The problem is since about 1/5 months ago I have gained close to 7 lbs.

Gaining or maintaining weight likely has more to do with you starting exercise than with you eating a funnel cake one time. Using muscles that you don't normally use to the point of exhaustion will make them retain water. 2 weeks worth of log data is insufficient to be able to tell if you are losing fat or not, you are correct that your body fluctuates weight and within that timescale you will not be able to tell if you are losing fat.

You have gained seven pounds in 1.5 months, as in today you were 123 and 1.5 months ago you were 115?

That doesn't seem like natural fluctuation and maintenance to me. That looks like weight gain.

Do you weigh your food? Log everything you eat? Where do you get your exercise burns from?

Have you been doing heavy weight lifting?

if you open your diary, we might be able to better help you figure out what is going on.
