Let's hypothetically say you signed up to run a half marathon (which is a long distance for you, but do-able). When do you STOP drinking in preparation for the race?

5 minutes?
2 days?
1 week?
3 months?

Where is the beer vs. athlete line drawn?

    NEVER!!!

I run with the beer in my hand.

Ahhhh...who am I kidding? I don't run. I just drink beer and watch others pass me by.

Probably not more than 2 the night before.

    There is no line.

Hmmm...Dunno about a 1/2 marathon. I play hockey so beer is consumed in the locker room right up until game time, occasionally on the bench and immediately following.

I'm no help *slowly backs out of thread*

    In for pre-race shotguns.

I wouldn't stop drinking because beers are a part of my life, and I like to have that fitness/drinker balance. I also don't race for time or bragging rights, either, so take that in to consideration ...

I just stop myself from signing up for half marathons. That solves the problem.

Beer helps keep me regular, and I would certainly like to lay a deuce prior to running a race. So, woudn't skip it at all.

Ever heard of the Alcohol Olympics?? I think it's a sport in college. The two can be combined. Just depends - if performance is your goal perhaps not!? :drinker:

See, I'm with Iceburg over here on the sidelines having a drink...

But my runner friends are arguing whether or not they're "allowed" to have a beer with me tonight. Obviously, I say yes, as I don't have to run to the corner and back this weekend *LOL*

Your runner friends are far too serious about their running.

I was told to fill my Camelbak with beer for the race.

Stop?? But...but...why? The last 1/2 marathon I ran had beer at one of the water stops. It was also in the heart of Bourbon country.

doesn't it depend on how you want to perform? Get smashed and run and it sucks. Drink less and it sucks less but is still running. If you are looking to PR then knock off all together for a long period. If you are looking to complete modestly enjoy yourself and ignore your friends. I PRed a race while crazy hung over a year ago. It was terrible but I survived and did well.

Stop having running friends. Problem solved! Now let's go have a drink or 5, shall we?

(seriously, with the advancements in prosthetics today, there is no reason to let your activity level limit your access to booze)

Let me be honest here. If I was running that distance, I would be in for the beer shotgun at the start.. then I would pull up a lawn chair in the sun with a cooler full of beer and watch the race.. with some nacho's too. **** the race, I will do it next time....Is that bad?

Aren't the cups that people hand out along the route filled with ice cold pilsners and lagers?

my thinking is the opposite. I think the more I run/exercise the more it mitigates my beer calories.

    and then, more beer.

    Yes.

And I think I pretty much won the argument that they should definitely have a beer with me :)

D? Wanna come over? Maya and LL are hanging out.

I have done the brew to brew in KC a couple of times, and there was plenty of beer drinking before, during and after. My answer may be biased, but I say, drink that beer all the way to the finish line!

There are actually some races that provide beer during the race... like the Tap n' Run 5k. As long as you are hydrated then drink as you please

    There's a line? I would drink a beer the night before a race/competition.

Beer is mostly water. You are just staying hydrated.

Your runner friends are waaaaay too serious. I have a friend who is a serious athlete: tri's, iron man, half iron man etc. who is constantly training for something and he doesn't stop drinking because of it.

    Life's too short!

So to answer your question there's no need to stop drinking just because you're training for something.

I have the solution , 13 bars 1 mile apart from each other , chug and run!
