Runners - blood in urine?

I need to start this post with, yes, I've been to the doctor and am awaiting my visit with a specialist to have a look at my kidneys and whatever else they need to investigate.

In the meantime, just wondering if anyone else has had this issue. After running, I typically have a lot of blood in my urine. It will go away after 1-3 times of urinating, so it doesn't last. It usually only occurs after running over 3 miles with no breaks (it doesn't happen when I do HIIT sprints or shorter distances).

Anyone else ever experienced this?

You wouldn't happen to have an IUD, do you? I spot after running and lifting, but my gyno said it's just from the IUD and as long as it's not a lot, don't worry about it. I never had this problem until I got the IUD either.

Huh. No, I never have. Good question though.

Like with JTick, it happens to me too because of my birth control, but usually only on 6+ mile runs.

Do you empty your bladder before the run? Try not doing that if you do. I can remember being told years ago that having a bit of liquid in your bladder acts as a cushion and can stop the bleeding.

If it persists I'd say check with a doctor. It is not something that should be happing with regularity.

Thanks for the tip! I tried it this morning and no symptoms. I felt like I had to pee the whole time I ran, lol, but at least I was fine after!

    Hehe! That's not ideal :)

What I would do was try to go 30 minutes before running. I'm a guy though, so if I need to go on the run all I need is a tree :)

And you don't necessarily need to run with a full bladder, just not IMMEDIATELY after peeing.

Well, yes, as a matter of fact I did. I'm not going to share much more because it will freak you out - and you're already going to a specialist - but it was not normal and I need ongoing care for it.
