I signed up for a 10K named Hospital Hill Run. Apparently there are a lot hills. :D I have 5 weeks and live in Iowa so not alot of natural hills I can train on so will be stuck on a treadmill. Any suggestions on hill work on the treadmill? What incline, how long, what speed, how many reps etc? My race pace is 10:00mm. TIA!

  • Hi! I'm training for a big hill walk too, while i'm at uni I have no access to hills (but luckily at home I have a nice hill range practically in my back garden)
While at uni, i'm lifting weights for general strength and fitness. The tread mills at my gym have "programs" which do all different things. I like to select one of the "hill" or "cross country" or "interval" programs for 30 minutes, and then just run/walk as I need to.
As long as you feel a burn in your legs then it's good. If not, pick a higher level or something hill-ier! Obviously the treadmill will never match real hills, but it's a good starting point.

Doing speed work on a track would give you a similar burn but nothing can really duplicate running the hills.
