BEER FEST

Soooooo, I've got a little dilemma. I just started exercising/eating more healthily about a month ago, and I've lost 4 pounds so far (which, to me, is GREAT!), BUT I have a problem. Every year, almost out of tradition, I go to the Beer Fest where I live, and it's exactly what you think. Beer and bad food galore! Also, Greek Fest is ALWAYS that same weekend, so MORE food on top of the beer and bad food. If I take one day to splurge (beyond any reasonable amount of splurging), is it going to heavily affect my weight loss so far? I know that it's not a good idea, and that I'll probably feel pretty crappy the next day (literally), and maybe even gain a pound or two, but is one day gonna mess me up COMPLETELY? I exercise five days a week for the most part and plan on exercising the morning before I go to Beer Fest just to make myself feel a *little* less guilty.

If you generally ate like **** and didn't do any exercise, but once in a blue moon ate some broccoli and went for a jog, would you be all healthy and fit?

This is about what you are doing most of the time...1 day is meaningless in the grand scheme of things. We don't get fat because of a beer fest or a holiday or a vacation or whatever...we get fat when we act like every other day is beer fest and the remaining days are Thanksgiving...

^^^ This. As long such events are rare you should be fine. :)

Thanks to everyone for your responses so far! I think that I just generally feel bad about *cheating* on my progress and needed a little reassurance!

You're all so right, though! I shouldn't feel guilty about splurging every once in a blue moon. We're all human and deserve a little fun after all our hard work. :)

I attend several beer fests a year, including one in Wisconsin with unlimited cheese (and brats for sale, too). You can fit anything into your day as long as you also move and eat reasonable portions in the other meals. I also try to drink a lot of water that day and the next day because the food at fests is usually pretty salty.

    Have fun!!

This is a great example of why most peopel fail at eating healthy. Don't look at this as sperging!!! Look at this as "My body needs food, whats the best source for it?" Consume what's in front of you in proper portions, think about what you have a vailable that you can come close to a meal portion for your goals on MFP.

If you keep the same mind set, you will fail! It'll result in you wanting to binge when these foods and [parties etc present themselves...It's hard but its a mentality you've got to change.

But the good thing about it is that when I'm feeling this way, I have the MFP community to keep me from doing so!!! :)

I totally understand what you're saying, though, and agree wholeheartedly.

I live every weekend like I'm at a beer fest and am still meeting my goals because I eat & work out during the week with the weekend in mind (that is, I keep calories low so that they can be high on the weekends).

It's not about being perfect; it's about enjoying your life while meeting your goals.

Don't miss out on that! Go and enjoy yourself and don't worry about it while you're doing it! You can get back on the wagon Monday ;)

    Have fun!!!

No. In fact, I lost 1/2 lb this week (first time in ages, due to some undereating and thyroid issues)... beer fest this past Saturday. Legitimately most of my calories that day were from beer *cough*

Enjoy yourself. Be safe. Etc. etc. I usually do a workout in the morning to keep me less anal about calories later in the day, and if it makes you feel better, beer fests *are* 3-6 hours of walking around/being on your feet.

ETA: Please report back with beer list for said beer fest so that I may drool.

^ this. Relaxing and enjoying having some "bad" food and some beer every now and then won't mess up your diet. I've had weekends of heavy eating, and yeah I gained a little, but guess what? A few days of going back on track and my body started losing all that gain. The most important thing, as mentioned above, is that for the majority of the time you're working to stay healthy.

Enjoy yourself, be safe and just get back on track when you're done living it up. Oh, and have lots of water! :D

You make a good point!!! This beer fest is from 2-6, so that's four whole hours of on-the-go-ness. :P However, I'm suuuuuure the calories in the beer are going to outweigh the calories I burn just standing on my feet. Booooooooooooo

And of course!!!! Does drooling burn calories!!!?!! :P

I went away on Vacation at the beginning of April to an all inclusive place - I was worried about it because that was 5 whole days of eating and drinking anything I wanted (and of course I wasn't going to hold myself back)...when I returned I had gained 4 lbs but the good news was as soon as I returned home I started right back into my daily routine of logging and exercises and the extra pounds I gained came off in no time (approx 2 weeks). So if you only do that for a day or two I can't see you gaining anymore than 2 pounds maximum so I wouldn't worry about it...enjoy yourself - we all have to do it once in a while :-)

Gotta continue to enjoy living life. Someone else said, you'll gain, but if you keep up your cardio and exercise routine, you're not going to blow up into Gilbert Grape. A few people had good little tidbits of advice, like eating some before drinking and eating smaller portions. Above all, have a good time with your friends. But if you're going by yourself, have a good time anyway.
