Working out ( swimming) and not losing/ gaining weight

Hey all! I recently changed MFP accounts so my diarys are blank...but I've been using the app for over a year now. Since March, I've been on an downward sprial gaining about a pound a week. I went to the doctor and was told my bloodwork/ thryoid levels came back normal. I am meeting with an endocrinologist in a month to weed out any possible health problems...anyways...so on April first I got a membership to an aquatic center. I was on the swim team back in high school so it's a workout I really enjoy. I've been going about 3-4 days a week for 30-35 minutes. I start out my swim with 14 laps ( without stopping) then I use a kickboard and kick 8 lengths of the pool. Then I do 4 sets of 2 laps. I'll do 4 laps backstroke, then another 4-6 laps then I end doing 4 laps with a kickboard. I have no idea how many calories I burn doing this but I've made sure to eat healthy proteins. For breakfast I'll sometimes have peanut butter with wheat toast or oatmeal. My snacks consist of measured almonds, or fruits. Lunch I'll have a baked chicken with fruit and greek yogurt. Then for dinner I'll usually do a lean protein with veggies.

Well since I've been swimming I've lost absolutely nothing! In fact I've gained weight. I really want to stick with my swimming routine but it's really hard considering I'm not seeing the results I want on the scale. Has this happened to anyone before?

  • I'm really sorry you're not seeing results - that's very frustrating. Good for you for joining the aquatic centre though. Maybe it will make you more toned, although I'm sure you already look great!

How many calories are you eating?

Do you use a food scale to weigh everything you eat?

If you're not losing weight, that means you are not in a calorie deficit (usually - not including any health issues you may have). Read the link below and see if you can find the problem. good luck.

Have you been taking measurements of your body? If you are accurately measuring your food and don't have any health issues, you could simply be losing fat and adding lean muscle to your body, which is great. Also, depending on the workout, your body can be holding on to water to repair your muscles, which is also desirable. :)

    This.

You aren't tracking. You have no idea how much you are eating. A lot of people find that swimming makes them hungrier, so if you are eating just a bit more than usual you could very well be erasing any deficit the swimming is creating.

Start logging. Check out the link.

I don't really care much about your swim workout, what I need to know is how much you're eating.
