Biking

So I've started biking to work. It rained today and that kind of sucked but oh well I lived. It costs me 8 dollars a day to drive/park, 4 dollars a day to ride the bus, and 0 to bike. I figure right now I spend between 1000 and 2000 dollars a year on transportation!!
I live just 4.2 miles away so its about 20-25 minutes in with stoplights. I obviously can't bike in the severe winter conditions (my asthma will not allow for it I'm sure no matter how fit I get by the time that weather gets here) but I can bike until it gets closer to negative temperatures!!
Wish me luck and perseverance!

Good for you, helping the planet, fighting the oil companies, and getting exercise all at the same time!!! Keep rockin' it as long as you can.0

I like your thinking!! We are big bikers here...but I couldn't imagine riding to work than actually working in my biking clothes...even if I did bring a change of clothes. what about your clothes...how do you handle the change of clothing, etc.0

I am biking to work this year as well. I teach preschool and work three days a week. The school is only 2.5 miles away so I add some distance on the way home.
Good luck!0 -
Good for you. :drinker: :drinker: Think of all the money saved, the fitness gained, the good you are doing yourself and the environment.
When we moved here we made some life changes. We researched the area, bike routes, and how far I wanted to be from the university. I gave away my (paid off) vehicle and bought a used 20- year old racing bike. I bike every day. My DH takes the kids to school and picks them up... We live close enough I can race home to take care of something and come right back (about a 12 minute ride - can be 8 minutes if the lights are just right and I'm riding like a maniac).
I bike five miles RT each day - summer dry sun, summer monsoon, winter cold, etc. I teach a night class so some days I leave the house in the dark at 6:30 a.m. and get home at 10:30 p.m. -- all ridden in the dark in the winter. This is the start of my third year.
Between insurance, maintenance, gas, parking, etc. I figure we'll save upwards of $10,000 in the five years of graduate school. This is the difference of us affording to buy a house or not. We bought the house.
Plus, this Forces me to ride, no excuses.:laugh:0 -
YOU GO GIRL!!! GREAT idea! I love your motivation! :flowerforyou:
I'd bike to work, but the living room isn't far from my bed. :huh:0 -
Thats awesome!! Does your work have a special place to park your bike and provide a locker room to shower up when you get to work?? I know one of the factories where i live provides sheltered secured parking for bike riders as well as locker rooms for the employees to clean up in before they begin work. I think it is awesome to provide such great incentives and offer so much support for employees using alternate transportation!! If only more companies would do this that would help so much!!0

Well it would help a lot to have a place to clean up but no we don't. I work at 7am so the temperature isn't quite too hot on the way in. I put my nice top, bra, and deodorant in a backpack and wear a t-shirt and a bra that's more supportive - one I can get sweaty. I have a bathroom in the office (its smaller) and no men arrive for a long time - none of the women mind me coming in sweaty and taking a minute to change and clean up. After work I get a few confused looks from others changing into a t-shirt and donning my backpack for the ride home. I don't want to get my nice tops all sweaty. Its been tolerable since I've started (like a week) but if it gets hotter I'll have to bring shorts into the equation I guess.0
