Can anyone give me advice on how many carbs to consume. I get a lot of conflicting numbers, and I'm left scratching my head. the ranges are large. I'm 5ft 3in. I would like to lose around 35 pounds. MFP has me at 170 carbs. It seems a bit high...but heck what do I know?

    Hi,

It really depends on the type of diet you follow. I follow a WFPB (Whole Foods Plant Based) vegan diet. So, my macros are set to 70% carbs, 15% protein and 15% fat. I consume approx. 1800 calories a day. I eat lots of veggies, fruits, grains and beans. :)

Carbohydrate are essential for your diet. The question is more like what are good carbs and what are bad carbs. Good carbs. have 2g of fiber for every 100 calories. Fiber in itself is a carb but unlike other carbs it wont digest. Your body will burn 7 calories for every gram of fiber you consume. Fiber passes through your digestive system cleaning it out so your body can absorb the nutrients you consume and lowers your cholesterol too. So if you eat something with 200 calories, 37g of carbohydrate with 7g of fiber you are only consuming 30 net carbs and your body burned 49 calories trying to digest it. So eat complex carbs. not simple carbs.

Carbohydrates are an essential part of every diet. When I refer to carbs, I am talking simple and complex carbs such as bread, cereal, pasta, rice, fruit and vegetables. The ratio of carbs you eat to your other macronutrients (fat and protein) may vary depending on the type of exercise you're doing. If you do a lot of cardiovascular exercise, like running, your carb ratio can be as high as 65%, with protein at 25% and fat at 15%, as an example.

If you're doing more weightlifting, most people increase their protein ratio. A lot of people do a 40% carb / 30% protein / 30% fat ratio. Some people do higher protein than that, too. But carbs still form a significant proportion of the diet. Carbs gives you energy to perform your workout.
