Lunch Meats, to much salt?

I lost 5 pounds ever since I joined Myfitnesspal and downloaded the app for my Android, but I noticed the last 2 weeks have been stagnant with my weight loss. Right now I am 209, but I was 207.5, everytime I get to 207.5 I gain a pound and a half Monday morning....I am wondering if it is water weight and if I could be possibly eating to much lunch meat? I tend to ear a few slices of bologna and salami with in my calorie count range. Maybe I should just got them out completely?

Yes it likely is the high sodium content of lunch meat that is causing your scale weight to go up due to water retention. But its water, not fat, so it doesn't matter...eat up unless you have been diagnosed with a blood pressure issue that has your doctor telling you to follow a low sodium diet.

I wouldn't recommend cutting them out unless, medically speaking, sodium is an issue for you. yes, the are typically quite high in sodium. but they happen to be good, low-calorie sources of protein, typically. If you are drinking plenty of water and generally staying within your sodium goals, i wouldn't worry about it. But I know what you mean. I switched to "no-sodium added" soup because I thought the sodium was crazy high, and i happen to eat soup regularly.

You could try swapping out lunch meats for other low sodium options. One good source would be to go to an actual deli and get carved slices of meats right there. Significantly less sodium, more protein, and tastes way better too. ^.^

But overall, if you have more sodium in your diet, compensate by improving potassium and drinking extra water.
  • Thanks for the advice and replies, I am just trying to get past 207.5 every time I get there it shoots up a pound or pound and a half. I want to at least be under 200 by my birthday June 28th

Well if its the number on the scale you are truly after then yes drinking more water eating less sodium will get you there in a jiffy. If you are wanting to actually lose fat then your sodium intake has no effect on that at all.

Could be. Lunch meat is processed and therefore loaded with sodium.

I hate how snacky meats are always so damn high in sodium (canned tuna, jerky, etc.). Why is this? Can the meats not be shelf-stable without all that salt?

If you're eating them all the time (or on a regular basis) then it shouldn't really affect your weight loss. If you usually eat a very low sodium diet and then suddenly eat a lot more sodium - then you'd see it on the scales.

Fresh meat isn't naturally shelf-stable. Salt is a good way of preserving it.
