Newbie with a question.

Rather new with all the technology stuff out there to assist. And I have truly been enjoying this site! Has demonstrated to me just how much sodium is in processed foods! Yikes!

Anyway, for the exercising, I decided to do the walking and I got this runtastic pedometer on my phone because it said it linked up with you, but I don't really know how to do that. haha So, instead I put in the walking and the time. On here it says that I burned 157 calories, but on my pedometer it says I burned a 1000. That seems like quite a large difference so I'm wondering if anyone can advise me as to which is more accurate? Or how to sync up my runastic to my account?

Thanks for this fabulous site by the way! Loving it!

A good rule of thumb I've found personally is that if you are exerting yourself, you burn about 100 calories for every 10 minutes. More if you weight more, less if you weigh less. For me, per a heart rate monitor, I burned almost 300 cals on a 20 minute walk when I weighed close to 200lbs, I burn about 150 cals on that same walk and I'm at about 160 now.

visit the site on a computer, go to APPS find the program you're using and give MFP permission to sync to it.

Wowzers......unless you walked for 10 hours i am thinking you go by the one that MFP said..but also realize that MFP often exaggerates cals also..so that being said I would be very conservative. Good rule of thumb is around 100 cals per mile.

i would get a heart rate monitor. Doesn't have to be anything fancy just a simple one. I got mine at walmart for like $25 and i love it. That way you aren't guessing how many calories burned and can keep better track of calories in and calories out.

There would be no way for a woman to burn 600 calories in 60 minutes of walking. I can barely do that as a man doing 60 minutes of HIIT. HRM's are not accurate unless you are doing high intensity steady state cardio.

Honestly OP, if you walk often, I would just update your profile to lightly active or just eat 100 to 200 extra calories. It's very very common for us to over estimate exercise and under estimate your intake.

Given all the great responses, I'm wondering if perhaps because I get the free version of runtastic, they sent me the email with the 'total' since I've been using it, rather than today's total? They are clearly trying to entice me to use their option that includes cal count and heart rate. All they said in the email is that I have burned 1000 cal. They didn't say it was just for today.

I think I will try to do the sync up with mfp and the runtastic on my phone and see how that works.

Thank you for the clarification. I think I'll continue doing what I've been doing and going with mfp numbers. :)
