I want to be done with doctor's. I went for a routine checkup a couple weeks ago, since I hadn't been to the doctor since middle school probably. They called me last week to tell me that my bloodwork deteremined I have Hyperthyroidism. They called today to tell me that both Endocrinologists in my area were booked through the rest of the year, but one had a cancellation today and I could take it. Of course I did!

The guy there asks me all the routine questions and then tells me I need more scanning done. So they send me off to get another 3 tubes of blood taken, and then start scheduling me appointments. I have to go on a strict low-iodine diet all weekend, and then Monday morning I'm off to the hospital for a pill, back around lunchtime for scanning and then back on Tuesday for more scanning. Ugh. After that I go back to see the Endocrinologist in the beginning of October to discuss results and treatment.

I just want this to be over!

I'm dealing with the same thing right now. I have to go to an Endocrinologist next Thursday. I'm glad you posted this, now I kind of know what to expect. Were you not feeling abnormal before you went? I definitely was/am.
    Good luck! :flowerforyou:

No I felt fine. It seems the only symptoms I can relate to are the irregular menstrual cycle and intolerance to heat. I was suprised when I was told I was Hyper and not Hypo, because you have unexplained weight loss. I definitely don't have that issue.

I'll report back when I get the testing done.

Girlie!!! Sorry this is happening to you.

I have a personal rule of thumb...If they are NOT rushing you in, it must be less pressing. When I was ill with something bad, and my husband was ill, the doctors personally walked us from doctor to doctor THAT day. :flowerforyou:

Does that help you at all? You must be lightly out of your range or they would force the issue. Ya know?

    Keep us updated girlie!!!

  • I work in a lab, so we were goofing around and we decided to check all our thyroids. Low and behold my was a sky high 23. It was funny! All my co-workers, plus the doctor said "How can you be standing?" "Don't you feel like crap?"! Well, not really, I just had my son and what new mom isn't tired? Thyroids are funny creatures! They can bounce back and forth. You'll do fine and once you get started on some meds, you thyroid should settle down.

    I know what you mean.
There was a hereditary heart disease going through my family, so I had to see my doctor, who then sent me to 5 different specialists.
All of them asked me the same questions and told me the same thing.
Probably NOT, but lets get you to ANOTHER doctor, after a while, its like, no thanks.

So, since you work in a lab I have a question. If 23 is "sky high" mine was 189. I've had a variety of reactions to that number including "that's almost critical" So what does that mean exactly?? Just curious.

Weird. They rated mine a 0 and said the healthy range was .3 to 5. I thought zero would mean inactive as in Hypothyroidism, but they said no it was the opposite.

Yeah - 0 is overactive. 0 means that your thyroid is changing all the tsh to t-3 or t-4 or whatever the h3ll it changes it to. You should have some TSH left. Under active and the TSH levels go up,up, up because your thyroid is not converting it efficiently or at all. TSH = thyroid stimulating hormone (brillian name huh?!) the hormone that your thyroid converts into stuff that makes the rest of your body function.

Right I have a huge amount of T3 and T4 in my system but no signs of any TSH, so they know my thyroid is being funky. I wish I had that symptom of unexplained weight loss.

 In this case it totally sucks to have the disease and not have the main symptom - hope they get you straightened out soon!

Yeah, it seems that once you get on the Hamster Wheel of Doc appointments, you will never be healthy again, nor you will have any free time as you always hafta go see yet another specialist for something else. :grumble: I hope they get you back to where you need to be soonest!

This is basically what I'm allowed to eat, starting Friday, going through Tuesday...

Meat: Fresh Beef, Chicken, Lamb, Turkey, Veal
Dairy: Fat Dry Milk Solids, Half & Half, Eggs (limited to 3 a week)
Fruits: Apple, Avocado, Cantaloupe, Coconut, Grapefruit, Orange, Peach, Raisins
Veggies: Any EXCEPT Lettuce, Cauliflower, Green Peppers, Baked Potato, Squash, Parsley
Bread: Low Salt Crackers, Graham Crackers, Corn Bread, absolutely NO commercial breads
    Cereal: Cornmeal, Oatmeal
    Starch: White Rice
Fats&Oils: Butter, Lard, Margarine, Italian Salad Dressing, Peanut Butter
Beverages: Fruit Juice, Gingerale, Weak Tea
    Sweets: Honey, Jelly, Sugar
    Absolutely NO vitamins

So yea....that'll be fun! They said all food has to be cooked fresh from home...no boxed or canned foods. It'll be chicken, crackers, fruits & veggies it sounds like! Maybe I'll make a big bowl of plain stirfry. Like chicken rice and broccoli or something. I don't know.

It's just to get all the iodine out of my system so that they can then give me a radioactive iodine pill on monday to use to do scanning later that afternoon and on to tuesday.

That does not sound like fun at all! Now I'm really dreading my appointment next week. It sounds like mine isn't quite as bad as yours. I'm at .003. I can't believe you were not feeling funky. I haven't had the unexplained weight loss thing either. Just a golf ball size knot in my neck, racing heart beat and extreme intolerance to heat. I hope things go well for you. Keep us posted.

I had a huge swelling in the side of my throat about a year ago, which I just thought was cold related. When I got it checked out, I didn't have insurance at the time, but the guy told me he didn't know what it was (isn't that annoying?) and just prescribed me prescription advil. He did mention that my thyroid seemed 'full'. So I finally have insurance and decided it was time to go get things checked out. I always feel pretty lazy and fatigued but I've always attributed that to lack of sleep rather than the thyroid. Who knows?

Well after 2 appointments yesterday and one today at the hospital, I'm done with my thyroid scanning and just awaiting the results. As I was walking out of the hospital today though I get a call from my Endocrinologist's office saying they got some tests back they did with my bloodwork and apparently the test on my liver came back abnormal...? So my primary physician is in the process of getting the paperwork from them so we can figure out what is wrong there.

    Dontcha love it?

On the plus side I've lost 11lbs since June 13th!!!

Got more blood drawn today, like the 4th time in the last couple weeks. I normally don't feel anything afterwards, but for some reason, this lady slammed the needle into my arm and now my whole arm is really sore! It feels like she hit a tendant or something. Ouch! :grumble:
