Oatmeal...

Any suggestions for how to make oatmeal appeal to a non-oatmeal lover? I've tried Chocolate Covered Katie's chocolate oatmeal and rather like it, but I'd like some other options. Anyone have a favorite recipe?

    I like oatmeal cooked in half milk(cows/almond/whatever) and half water, honey or brown sugar, cinnamon, chopped apples, and walnuts.
    Also, try taking raw oats and mixing with your favorite fruit yogurt and let sit over night in the fridge. Come morning it's delish!

    Personally, I love oatmeal by itself, but I also add yogurt, milk, berries, grapes, peanut butter, maple syrup, nuts, bananas... really anything light and breakfasty can be tossed into oats and made hearty and good.

    I add chopped apples, cinnamon, half of banana, few chopped walnuts. Yum

    You could try making oatcakes? I've been making loads of different flavoured ones recently eg. Coconut, Raisins, Summer Fruits.

    Here's a recipe if your interested for the basic version;

    100g Butter
    80g Demera Sugar (i use normal sometimes)
    140g Oats
    3 tbl spoon Golden Syrup (honey also works out quite nice)
    1 - 2 tbl spoon Peanut Butter
    And the fruit of your choice.

    1. Mix the Oats/Peanut Butter/Fruit in a bowl
    2. Melt the Butter/Sugar and Syrup in a pan
    3. Combine everything in the bowl then pour it into a brownie tin
    4. Cook on a medium to high heat in the oven for approx 25min
    5. Check on it and increase time if needed.
    6. Once cooked cool and serve.

    Sometimes its the texture of oatmeal that bothers people.... if so then try...
    Steel Oats
    or
    Coach's Oats instead.

    I'm okay with using butter and sugar in recipes. I figure it's better than using margarine and artificial sweeteners. Although I am unlikely to use butter and sugar for a breakfast recipe, would much rather have some ice cream after dinner :)

    I just started making overnite /crockpot steel cut oats. I use chia seeds and banana. Truly can add anything to yours, I was looking for lower cal/carb/sugar

    1 cup steel cut oats
    4 cups water
    1/2 cup low carb vanilla milk (any milk will do)
    1tsp banana extract (not necessary but I had on hand)
    2 mashed mini bananas (find less waste since 1 reg banana is more than a serving size but for this recipe would be fine, I just had mini ones frozen on hand and my 2 mini's weighed 60g
    1T chia for the extra goodies chia seeds pack and they expand (so ended up getting 5 not 4 servings and lessened the stats too!)
    1/4 tsp salt (I used kosher)
    1T butter (I used Shedds spread)
    Sweetener (I used a few packs of sweet n low before I unplugged it for the nite)

    PAM spray the crock, add ingredients. I cooked on LOW for 2 hrs then used keep warm for a few hours but truly could have shut it off and let it be till the morning

    Made 5 servings of about 240 gm, 157 cals/26 carbs/6 g protein (can be frozen)

    I do overnight oats, too, right now, but served cold. It's kind of pudding-y.

    Google "refrigerator oatmeal." There are a million different variations. Bonus: no cooking in the morning.

    i love oatmeal! i cook my oats in almond or soy milk and always mash half a banana into my oats to make it sweet. also, i have to have cinnamon in my oats (it makes them that much better). then i may top it off with a spoonful of peanut butter, or raisins, or honey, or fruits. :P

    Some times i cook oats in a lentil soup instead of milk . It is a salty porridge,you can add blanched peas,some onion finely chopped carrot....
    Somewhat as you like it :-)

    1 cup almond milk
    then cinnamon, nutmeg, walnuts, banana, and brown sugar/maple syrup.

    Or brown sugar, walnuts, and a little bit of chocolate chips.

    The important thing is to start with a decent bowl of oatmeal. The best I've found is "Good Food Made Simple" steel cut oatmeal ... each box has 2 single serving containers that reheat in 3 minutes in the microwave. You'll find it in the frozen foods section of your Grocer.

    ^ This. During Easter I cut off a Reester bunny's head and put that in my bowl of oatmeal with a banana. Friggin delicious.

    I like to eat old fashioned rolled oats like a cold cereal. I do one half cup dry oats, 1 C milk, cinnamon, 2 T walnuts and a little sweetener sometimes.

    In a separate bowl mix about 1 T of sugar free pudding mix with 2 T (almond) milk... Then stir into oatmeal after it's cooked
    I love the banana flavor but vanilla and cheesecake add such good flavor also!!
    Other ideas:
    -frozen berries.. They melt on top slowly and are sooo good
    -sliced almonds or granola.. I like a little crunch mixed into my oats
    -protein powder/peanut butter/almond milk - stir together to create runny paste.. Add on top after for protein packed sweet topping that's almost like frosting!

    I love oatmeal though... I'll eat it any way

    I never cared for oatmeal until I switched from the instant stuff to the rolled oats and the Steele cut oats. I like adding raisins, walnuts, a little brown sugar or blackstrap molasses, a little cinnamon, and a little milk. I also like making savory oatmeal (instead of water, cook the oats in soup, lentils, beans, etc.). One of my favorite things to do with oats is make these banana oatmeal bars. They are great for an on the go snack.

    3 small ripe bananas
    1/3 cup applesauce
    2 cups uncooked oats
    1/2 cup milk, whatever kind you use (I use nonfat cows milk)
    1/4 cup raisins
    1/8 cup brown sugar
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1 tsp. cinnamon

    Mash the bananas and mix in the rest of the ingredients. Bake at 400 degrees in an 8 x 8 pan for 20 minutes. Let cool, then cut into 12 bars. Wrap each bar and store in the fridge. I like to eat them while they are cold.

    These are great as is, or you can other stuff to them as you like. I've been adding 1/2 cup chopped walnuts and a little dark chocolate to my batches. Other add-on ideas...pecans, chocoate or carob chips, ground flax seed, pumpkin/pepita seeds, other kinds of dried fruit (cherry, dates, prunes, cranberries, etc.), coconut, etc.

    It's funny to me that for many many years I felt I would not enjoy oatmeal without brown sugar or maple syrup of honey on it, but since starting with MFP, I just use 1 T of raisins and 1/4 whole milk and 1 T butter in my oatmeal and I like it much better!
