Older lady wondering about strength training

Kia ora, I have just reached my goal weight using a fairly straightforward approach of less in, more out via MFP and exercise. I've only been doing cardiovascular though - 3 forms, walking briskly, swimming and static bike. I love my walking and swimming and use the bike when wet or for a change. 57 yrs old. So I'm about to move to maintenance and wanting to think about a lifelong pattern. I was wondering what people's thoughts were on introducing some strength work and if so what I could do that didn't involve a gym visit. Is it necessary given my age, that I'm at my goal weight (73kg to 59.7kg) and while not super toned I'm not flabby. Only other point of note is I'm 3 yrs post-breast cancer with a reconstruction but otherwise in good health. Thank you in advance.

I have studied exercise physiology quite a bit for my career and I would tell you that many physicians would recommend a sound and well designed weight resistance training program. I cannot express in just one paragraph the benefits such a program produces in the body both short and long term.
I have seen scientific studies that show profound positive impacts for older exercisers, including maintaining cognitive abilities compared to those who did not lift weights. it really affects many systems of the body in a great way.0 -
I think everyone could absolutely benefit from strength training and that includes you. It's never too late and only has positive results. As for what to do from home, I won't be much help there but I think I've seen "You Are Your Own Gym" recommended before. --> http://youareyourowngym.com/ <-- Certainly things like squats and pushups (modified to start is just fine). You could also get some dumbbells to increase your options too. Congratulations on your progress so far!0
