Tough Mudder, where to keep stuff?
I know there has been a few threads on this before but they tend to lean more towards clothing than anything else (from reading I've gathered that clothes that dry quickly are best - not cotton - and longer trousers to protect legs, comfortable shoes, decent socks to avoid blisters as much as possible etc).
I'm doing tough mudder on 15th June with my fiancé (just the two of us). I know that for after the event there is a bag drop area where I can keep a bag with things like a towel, change of clothes/shoes, food, drink, money and phone etc.
However, for during the event I've heard of people using things like lip balm to stop chapped lips, sun cream on faces etc and energy gels. Now, some people say they just stick a few energy gels and a lip balm in their pockets and their done, I've heard other's say they wear a bum bag/fanny pack (whatever you call it) and pop it in a zip lock bag and it keeps it safe.
From previous tough mudders, would you recommend taking any of that along the way? If so, pockets or a bum bag?
EDIT: by bum bag I mean something like this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Waterproof-Runner-Biking-Running-Jogging/dp/B00HVVOZ16/ref=sr_1_11?s=sports&ie=UTF8&qid=1399559015&sr=1-11&keywords=bum+bags NOT those huge cumbersome things you see tourists wearing.

I did the ROC Race last year, while it didn't have mud, it did have a LOT of water and foam. The wrecking balls alone knocked me into a pool of water and I was fully submerged. Personally, I wouldn't keep anything in my pockets. I popped a couple energy gels right when we started and that was all. I already had sunscreen on. My race lasted about 40-45 minutes and then I just went for my bag. I think you'd probably be fine without the extras until your race was complete, but again, I've never done a tough mudder so...
ETA: It sounds fun though! My friend Amanda keeps trying to get me to do one with her.
Other things to keep in your bag - baby wipes (unless the place has a shower...I hear mud can get itchy when it dries) and definitely bring a plastic bag for your dirty clothes.0 -
My event is 12 miles, I think. I know that every so often they have a 're-fuel' station with things like bananas and water etc. Our's has 5 water stations, so I'm not sure if it's worth taking something or not, that works out at a water station every 2 miles give or take.
And of course there is a free beer afterwards.0 -
12 miles?! Holy crap that's wow...That's awesome. I'd probably die. Hahaha.
Yeah, you may want some lip stuff with SPF in it...
I tried googling and found nothing...hmmmm. I think the ziplock bag idea sounds like a good idea. I just saw a bunch of articles about making sure you don't ingest the water in the mud pits...ew0 -
Yeah make sure you keep your mouth shut when going through the mud/water and get a tetanus booster "just in case". The tiny snack sized ziplocs work pretty well for lip balm/small things but be prepared to lose them. Between mud and hurdling your tired mass over obstacles? Well things get jiggled loose. I also duct taped my laces down to my shoes since they have a tendency of leaving my feet at bad times. Oh, consider taping your hands fighter style to give you more grip once you get muddy and stuff. Have fun!!!!!0

I did TM last year and didn't carry anything except for a Gu packet stuffed into the key pocket of my leggings. It stayed there the entire time because the aid stations were ample enough. One thing I do wish that I'd had is sunscreen. I burn really easily, and I can still see the x marks from my tank top on my back they make little 1-dose pouches you can carry with you, or you could squeeze some in a baggie.
Like was said above, be prepared to lose any loose objects. A teammate almost lost her dad's lucky bandana in the arctic enema - her husband dove in for a whole minute and found it...if that's not love, I don't know what is.0
