Eating poorly, losing weight faster- what's happening?!

I was eating very well, strictly clean foods, and losing weight about 1 lb a week for about a month and a half.

I celebrated reaching a weight goal with a day of unhealthy eating- still under my calorie goal- then had four days of end-of-college partying with pizza, cookies, milkshakes... I didn't even count calories. BUT in those 6 days I've lost 3.5 lbs. What is this all about?? What's going on?

Weight loss or weight gain over the period of a week is pretty meaningless to be honest. Could be anything. Perhaps its your monthly cycle, perhaps you drank a lot and your sodium level decreased, perhaps the moon was full that day. Who knows.

You don't "weigh" one weight, you weigh a range of weight...an average. You happened to weigh yourself when your weight was on the low end of that range.

As long as you're getting the nutrients you need, what you eat doesn't have an impact on weight loss. Sure, a diet of only snacks over a long period of time will probably have some health consequences, but for a short period or every now and then, it doesn't really make a difference. So, as long as you were consuming less calories than your body burned, you lost weight.

ETA: I'm not saying that you lost that amount of weight in that short amount of time! Sometimes water weight can mask fat loss. Maybe you decreased your sodium, lost the extra water and saw a big loss? Weight can fluctuate quite a few pounds, so it's hard to tell.

Stress can affect weight loss. If you were celebrating graduation (and the end of all that school-related stress), it's not surprising to see a loss.

And by weight loss here I think we mean water weight (correct me if I am wrong and putting words in your mouth Alice). You didn't drop 3.5 pounds of fat in a couple of days.

It takes about a month for your body to get used to a diet plan or exercise plan but you won't really see big results until you reach the 3 month mark. When they say you will lose one pound a week it does not mean that every week you will weight a pound less. The weight loss shows mostly all at once. That week you binged will probably show some weight gain but not right away, or if you go back on track it might not show at all. Either way your suddent weight loss was not from the week before but the combined effort of the month or months before.

So if you see a pound change don't hold your breath but once you see a 5 pound loss or more than you are seeing the real results. Also, the body gets used to a low calorie diet and you will plateau on your weight loss, doing cheat meals once a week is a good way to boost your metabolism and it will help you lose weight. Keep it down to a meal or two a week though, not two days or a week :) Good luck

Oh, no, I didn't mean that she lost 3.5 pounds of fat in a couple of days. I was thinking more that she could've been retaining water in the weeks leading up to graduation, which would be masking any loss she would've seen before then. I just meant that it's not surprising to see a loss after a major stress-reducing event. Some people are more sensitive to stress than others. I could be doing everything perfectly and be on track to lose, but if you put me under stress, I'll guarantee that I won't lose, no matter what. Take away the stress and BAM, I'll be back on track with a big loss.

Certainly true of me. I am hyper-consistent with my diet hitting my mark almost every day and/or adjusting the next day if I did not. For the first 6 weeks I saw no change at all to my scale weight and after changing basically nothing about what I was doing I moved into a steady 1.3 pound per week weight loss. If later on the line I again stop losing weight for weeks I probably won't think much of it unless it continues for several months because its probably just another one of those random things with water retention that happen on the time scale of weeks.
