Gastric bypass WILL help with reduction of intake, but a lot of people still don't address the actual habitual behavior. Some even substitute eating with alcohol, gambling, or some other addictive behavior. And GB doesn't mean that one can't regain weight back.
Be sure that this is really what you want to do because it can't be undone once it's done.

I couldn't have bypass surgery because I need open heart surgery, so it wasnt an option for me. It has taken me 49 weeks so far and I have lost 144lb or 10 stone 4lb. I know we are all different and I am not a medical person, but YOU can do it without expensive invasive surgery. A complete change of lifestyle is what is needed though. With surgery you can still try to eat and drink all the bad stuff and never really learn a healthier option. My surgeon said to me very seriously "you will die within 5 years if you don't sort yourself. I won't consider operating on you until you have got under 210lb". So I heeded his warning and am now 185lb.

This isn't about me bigging myself up, rather to show you there is an alternative to surgery no matter how large you are. Surgery to me seems like the easy option. That's just my opinion. You may think it is easy for me to talk as I have now lost most of the weight that was ruining my life but I was once 329lb, and I despaired for many years.

This is a photo of me taken before and very recently. I still want to lose another 28lb but I am fully mobile, swim 4 times a week, walk, cycle and enjoy life to the full now, minus the junk food/alcohol, I see the cardiologist on May 29th to discuss my surgery. :-)

MFP will help. Gastric bypass is overdone and should only be done as a last resort. By all means if you are one of the morbidly obese (I used to be morbidly obese so this is not a judgmental statement) individuals who must do this or face certain death, then by all means do it. Most of the time, it is unnecessary though.

Think about it this way. Without the surgery if you reduce intake (diet) and increase movement (exercise) you will lose weight. There is no additional cost and no risky surgery involved. (Exercise is not even required but it will help you lose faster and improve your overall health)....

With the surgery, you are out a big chunk of change, risk side effects that could even include death by infection or other complication, AND you have to.... diet and exercise ....

Why not just do the one thing that is consistent between the two... diet and exercise... I mean get serious about it and do it and keep your money in your pocket... Again, I recognize that this is necessary in certain situations... I am not being judgmental here... I started at 344 (BMI about 43) and dropped to 228 (BMI about 28) via diet and exercise alone.... I know it can be done without risky surgeries and such. There is no magic pill or potion that is going to do it for you... it is all about portion control.

Best wishes and may you achieve your goals regardless of the method you choose to follow!

And don't forget to read through many many bypass message boards where people post their stories how their operation went wrong.

It's a risky surgery and some people end up being invalid or having to live with a stoma - sometimes other complications develop. The chances are there and it can happen to anyone. You will have to sign a consent form that you are aware of the risks. And then there will be nobody to sue afterwards...

So really think twice because the harder way may still be the safer way.

And yes, there are some people who regret it despite losing weight, due to constant discomfort, unable to eat or drink properly, or unable to live with the changed eating habits.

I had a sleeve done 2 years ago. I have lost 144lbs and am now what I always wanted to be. A normal healthy person who needs to watch their weight and would like to lose half a stone!! My sleeve stops me from over eating at every meal. MFP helps me to watch my weight and eating throughout the day. I am now up 4lbs from my lowest weight and am as a result upping my exercise and watching my calories. I know that fir me without this operation I would never have lost that original pile of weight and without mfp and exercise I would have probably put more back on.
