Better to be over or under my calorie goal?

The app recently reduced my calorie goal to 1200 cals. The problem is, I need to hit 1200 cals just for my body to function... Since it's almost impossible to hit exactly 1200, is it better to be slightly over or slightly under my goal?

If I'm eating any processed foods, I'd go a little under. It'ss fine. Calorie counts on foods are off most of the time by 10-20%. It's partly because there is a pretty considerable margin of error ("uncertainty" is the scientific term in most lab environments) which allows numbers for calorie counts to be averaged and rounded off. I mean, seriously, not all foods are calorically valued in intervals of ten.

Also consider for net that the "calories burned" feature on machines or on here are often slightly over-estimates, and even a heart rate monitor, while being the more accurate, also leaves room for uncertainty with margins of error.

As long as on a weekly basis you're pretty on track numerically, you should be fine. You can go a little over or a little under depending on how satiated you feel that day.

I would say it's better go slightly over than under in this situation.

Have you thought of raising your calories a bit? I ask because you've already lost quite a bit of weight and those last pound should come off slower so that by the time you reach maintenance there is not a big jump to maintenance.

ETA: I misread your ticker. I see you still have quite a bit of weight to lose.

! was concerned about that as well until one week i found myself about 200 - 300 calories over for a couple of days and still managed to lose 2 pounds that week. eat if your hungry and just make sure your balancing your diet.
