Stress ate today... help!!

I am having a hard time with not finding a job or research this summer(and from the past semester) and today I let it drive me bananas. I have eaten so far hummus and pita bread, half a bag of ATHENOS pita chips and two eggs. I think I've eaten close to 2000 calories. Please help!

Not much we can do to help, but remember, tomorrow's a new day! That happens to everyone sometimes I think. It's not going to ruin all your hard work the one time. Good luck finding a job!

The database says 1/2 a container of those chips is 360 cals, 1 medium egg is 65 cals. Can you not look them up? Does it not have the info on the packet?

ETA: The hummus and pita is also on here...

Look it up and log it as accurately as you can. Take a deep breath. Take another deep breath. Take a third deep breath....Move on and put this behind you. Meanwhile, check your calories and if you're on the lowest (sedimentary) think about losing weight a bit slower by upping your calories to manageable. A lot of people on here who binge for "emotional" reasons are not eating enough!

    One day over is fine.

One way to look at it is the following...

If you have MFP set for 1 pound loss a week, that is 500 a day deficit. This means you can go over your calories for a day by up to 500 and STILL be on the path for fat loss in that day! If you go over by 1,000 calories in a day (just once in the week), you are STILL on the path for FAT loss for the week.

Working the numbers, you could actually over eat by 1,000 calories over goal THREE times in a week, and STILL be losing fat for the week. Sure, it'll be much slower loss, but is still FAT LOSS. And sometimes we need that sort of week for whatever reason. Just don't make it every week!

Do remember, extra food in means more water retention due to sodium as well as the simple need of water to help process food. This water weight will shed once the food and sodium goes through the system. It is also why we seem to gain a ton of weight after having a bad day/week.

You seemed very upset about this.. Let me just share a bit of friendly advice with you..
It doesn't matter what you've eaten. What's done is done. Whether you've eaten 200 calories or 2000, you can't change it. Don't feel bad, and DEFINITELY don't try and "make up" for it by cutting back tomorrow. This will just cause you to feel deprived which will make you will binge and then restrict, then binge etc.
Try to take weight loss day by day and make each choice a healthy one. Don't get stressed about what you've eaten in the past. Just let it go and trust yourself to make better decisions. Take everything slowly. Before you eat, or before you even step foot in to the kitchen, decide exactly what you're going to prepare. Make a healthy choice and stick to it. Remind yourself that you love yourself and you're making that choice because you want what's best for you.
Changing eating habits is a long process. A big part of changing your relationship with food is realizing that we all make mistakes. You must love yourself enough to forgive yourself and making better choices now because you deserve it.

2000 calories will probably not hurt you at all.

    what is your TDEE?

No offense to Paula, but that is exactly the attitude that will lead you to having another day like today.

The "its no big deal" thing isn't going to help. It will encourage you to do it again. I don't know where you live, but if it's in the US, it is no later than 4:45PM. There are still plenty of hours in your day to make it right!!

First thing's first. Put the chips down. Finding a job is HARD, I am in the middle of it myself. But stressing, eating, and potentially gaining weight are not going to help you find a job. When you start stressing about it, sit down and DO something about it. If you have exhausted yourself searching online for openings, shut down the computer, and write down (yes, with a pen and paper) exactly what you are looking for. It is so easy to skim through online openings going "Yep, that sounds good, Resume sent. That looks ok. Resume. I could do that. Email. Eh, it's not as much money as I deserve, but I need a job. Resume." Write down what you are GOOD at. And things that you might need to work on to make yourself a better candidate. It's amazing how DOING something for 15 can make you feel. And put things in perspective.

Next: as far as your calories for today goes, it is hard to say if you don't know exactly how much you ate.

9oz bag of Athenos pita chips has 1080 calories. So if you ate about half (about 50 chips) that would be 540 calories.
One pita can have anywhere from 80-200 calories. I don't know how much you ate, but let's call it 150 calories.
Most hummus has 50-70 calories per 2 Tbsp. If you ate one pita and chips, I would guess you ate about 4 servings of hummus, so let's call that 250 calories.
Two eggs are about 160 calories total, assuming you didn't add anything to it.

= 1100 calories. Not going to kill you.

If you don't have your dinner planned out, I would plan to eat something low carb and low fat, like grilled chicken or fish and steamed veggies. I would NOT try to skip any meals you have left in the day, as that can often lead to late night binge-eating.

Finally, go for a walk. Or a jog on the treadmill. Something to combat your stress and over-eating in one. For days like the one it sounds like you're having, I turn on my cable provider's On Demand feature and there are TONS of free workout videos (they aren't always the most entertaining, but it will work in a crunch). Do some yoga or pilates, kickboxing, whatever will release some stress (and calories).

Most importantly, PLAN AHEAD for the next time you think you might be feeling this way. Because it WILL happen again. Try sneaky things like putting your apples in front of the pita chips in the pantry. This way you have to move the apples to get to the chips. Or divide the pita chips into single serving baggies and only bring ONE to the couch while you have your pity party, instead of eating from the bag.

Hope this helps. Sorry to be so harsh :) Good luck on your job hunt!

Thanks everyone for your inputs. I can't believe I stress ate....... I feel like a weak idiot who can't handle her own problems. That said, I have had a VERY bad day. In fact, a very bad six months, and I don't know when things will be getting better.

But I want this, and I'm not giving up now. Thanks everyone for the support!

I ate half a large takeaway pizza once, got terrified I'd messed up my entire weight loss and got all sad....a week later I'd still lost a lb.

Just eat a little less tomorrow and excersise a bit more
