Weight Loss with Odd Motives

Hello! I just joined here today, and I can't help but feel that I don't necessarily have the best motives for losing weight ^^" I actually play quidditch at college level (yes, quidditch has become an actual sport. We do ride brooms, there is no flying involved, and it's probably about as intense and dangerous as rugby), but after a huge bout of asthma and general illness over the winter my endurance went down the drain, as well as my strength and what little speed I gained during the fall semester. My team will be entering tournament leagues next year, so I am trying to use the summer to get back into shape so I don't hold any of them back.

While I don't think it's the best motive, since there are more important things to focus on, I can't help but notice how much more excited I am to put my best foot forward this time. I have tried to lose weight and get in shape many times, and with many methods--but I always end up dying out within the first few weeks due to lack of motivation. Perhaps the fact that my actions influence my fellow teammates, rather than only affecting myself, makes things different this time.

Anywho, that's my schpeel. Is there anything you would recommend about using the site? I've read minor things about the calculators being inaccurate--would anyone be able to clarify on that a bit?

On a side note, what motives do you have? Do you think they go off the beaten path? How have they motivated you in comparison to other ones you may have tried before, or how have they influenced you in general?

    I would say there are no odd motives for losing weight - everyone has different reasons why and they are all valid. Because you want to get back into shape is a perfectly valid reason, and all the more because you want to compete at a higher level in sport you love (I have got to find some of this on YouTube to watch).

    As for the calculators, I've read many things about them being inaccurate, but unless you want to spend money on HRM (heart rate monitors) and other gadgets - they work fine for the majority of people. I've comfortably lost 2 stone using them. You are supposed to eat your exercise calories back, but if you're concenrned about this, then just leave some. Majority of posts i've seen recommend eating around 75% back, and leaving a small margin of error.

    I'll say it. The sport is odd. Your motive isn't really, it's no different than training for any other sport. Even if, truly, the sport is seriously odd. :ohwell:

    While my health and appearance are some of my motives, my motivation is Taekwondo. I was to be faster, more agile, able to kick higher, spar longer, and keep improving. I think there is a difference between a motive (reason to do something) and a motivation (something that makes you want to do something) and the motivations are important :) Quiddich sounds great!

    Welcome to MFP! Quidditch sounds quite interesting. We all have our goals & reasons, so yours is not odd at all. I want to be in better shape for tap dancing, jogging, and overall good health. Oh, and I'd like to eventually wear a bikini for the 1st time in ages (not to impress anybody, though admittedly I wouldn't mind a compliment, but for the sense of accomplishment & follow-through).
