I wondered about this also. Could it be based on rounding it up, ie, a month is four weeks and some months are slightly over this. Or is there a scientific basis I wonder also?0

Because0

Because
....that is how they programmed it.0 -
Why does it matter?0
-
I agree. I wish you could adjust it to 1 or 2 weeks.0
-
Does it really matter? Its the point that if you stick to your plan you'll see progress. One day at a time, one pound at a time. Also, just because the app says that, doesnt necessarily mean that it's GOING to happen, there are alot of factors that inhibit changes in your body. Just be good to yourself and you'll get there. Can can't put time frames on perfection!0
-
It doesn't matter it's never right anyway.0
-
Yeah, making it adjustable would be awesome.0
-
I'm guessing it's because they thought most people would want to lose one pound a week, and, if they played by the rules, would want to be reassured that, if every day were like today, they could lose FIVE POUNDS by some date. I always saw it as a, "that would be cool to weigh that much," and never really focused on the date. which is in a smaller font, anyway. coincidence? probably not.0

I just ignore the "you'd weigh ____ in 5 weeks". Only drives me crazy0
-
I find that more discouraging than encouraging so I just ignore it...because not everyday will be like today, and tomorrow just might suck!!0
-
As its a meaningless number it probably doesn't matter.
It is based on what you weighed last time you entered your weight and only calculates on that particular days calorie and takes no account of what calories you ate on previous days.
Because the idea of MFP is to eat your entire calorie goal, plus your exercise calories then if you are using this tool as it was designed it should be saying 5 times the weekly loss you set for in 5 weeks (e.g. if you weigh 180 lbs and set for a 1 lb per week loss you should be looking for it to say 175 lbs in 5 weeks until you weigh yourself again)
Unfortunately this feature often leads to reducing calorie goals or upping exercise burns without eating calories back in a race to lose weight faster.0 -

I have to agree with you. I look at it and thing *ugh 5 weeks and ill only be that, no where near my goal* Just being honest, I tend to ignore it too.0 -
It was probably meant to help people stick with their deficit for at least 5 weeks instead of the usual 1 before quitting. Personally, I find it a silly and often misleading metric.0
-
My guess would be that because most people think weight loss should be INSTANT!!!!! There's a billion threads where someone started MFP 3 days ago and is already ready to quit because they haven't gotten skinny yet. 5 weeks is a reminder that things take time. Too much time and all those impatient people will be disinterested. Too little time and they'll want their instant results. 5 weeks is enough time to see how things are going and access what you need to do from there.
Of course the @(@^$)@)&$! thing is never even the slightest bit close to being right for me, but a girl can dream.0 -
I like it.
But for some maybe they would like it to be shorter time frames. You should be able to customize it.0 -
My only complaint about it being 5 weeks is I am an even numbers gal. I would prefer 4 or 6 but since it gives us 5 I just ignore it. I am glad I am not alone when thinking, why 5 weeks?0
-
i just figured it was because most diets only last about a month , and soo 5 weeks , stick to it , pushes the sticking with it factor out a little farther...0
