Bad ankle pain! Please help :(

Options
Hi all,

I seem to have bad ankle pain in both of my ankles and it doesnt seem to be going away! It first started over 2 weeks ago when I got some new running shoes and after a few runs I noticed pain on my ankles. I took the trainers back and got another pair and again after a few runs I was getting pain on my ankles again. I took them back and changed them for Nike Structure. A few days after getting the Nike I did a half marathon race and I did feel the pain on my ankles after a few miles. The pain seems to be on my outside ankle bones but more on the inside and the pain runs from my inside ankle bone and right up the side to the top of my foot. Does anyone know what I can do or give me any tips?

The sports shop said to me the other week if I was still getting pain then to see a physio. If there anything I can do to stop getting pain on my ankles in the future? I really dont want to give up running and I do miss it!!

I'd see a doc, but I might be overcautious with the preexisting injuries I've got. If you're not ready to take that step...

Make sure you're stretching properly and getting plenty of ankle support. You may to change your form or shoes. Might also need more support with a simple insert, wrap or brace. Don't take a pain reliever before you run because you might unknowingly injure yourself further. Given my history of fractures (birth control/bone density issues), my doc put me on a calcium regimen... 2 tums daily.

I really wish I could be of more help! If you're really serious about running, you should definitely see a doc if the problem persists. Could be nothing, but could be the beginning of something serious that could've been easily avoided.

I would go see a doctor. If you don't need a referral to a specialist then I would find an orthopedic doctor.

Thanks for the replies. Wouldnt it be better to see a physio than a doc? The staff at the sports shop did tell me to see a physio

See a Physio or a Podiatrist as Podiatrists specialize in feet and ankles. I work for four and they see many runners with ankle pain.
