Knee Injury

I'd like to get some helpful feedback from those who might have experience with this. I just started a Couch to 5K plan and today about halfway through my knee started hurting to the point where I couldn't jog/run and I had to hobble/walk back to my starting point. For background, yes, I'm overweight. I started this routine last Saturday and I did walk on days off rather than completely rest which I am fully aware is my fault for being a little overzealous and not taking days off. That being said, it's somewhat swollen and it hurts to put any weight on it, even walking. I've spent plenty of time hiking, gardening, playing basketball, etc and never had something like this, so this is new to me. I've Googled some possibilities, but I'd like to get feedback if any of you gave experienced something similar.

Anywhere in particular on the knee where it hurts? There could be any number of things going on0

What part of your knee is it? I've been running for a few years, but last summer I had an ITB issue come up. It's the tendon that runs down the outside of your leg, and most often you feel the pain in the knee (mostly on the outside). It can be caused by lack of proper running shoes, uneven ground, issues with form, etc. It went away but still flares up from time to time - through trial and error I think I've discovered than running with my dog makes it worse  :noway:
Of course, it could be any number of other knee joint issues.
I'd say go the RICE route - rest, ice, compress, elevate (no c25k!) - plus maybe an OTC NSAID for a few days and see if the swelling and pain go down. If not, or if it returns when you start running again, then it's probably time to see a doctor to find out exactly what is going on and what is best to do about it.0 -
I've tried running before, but quite simply my knees prevent me from trying it anymore. I've torn the cartilage. I also tend to hyperextend them as I land when running, which is no good, and landing me on crutches for a few weeks until the swelling went down.
That being said those are my experience while trying running. You may very well be different and I'd suggest having your knee checked out by a good sport medicine doctor or your regular GP. Hope it's nothing major, and you're back to running soon.0 -
GMallan, I was trying to determine that and I think it's the medial anterior (inner/front) part of my knee. It hurts to put weight on it and it burns somewhat when I put weight on it.0

mathjulz, I don't think it's ITB based on what you've said because it's on the wrong side, but I am doing RICE. I hate being sidelined, but I guess it's what I need to do.0

missy_girl001, I'm sorry to hear about your experience. I hope you found something else that you enjoy. I'm really hoping that this is a temporary setback on my part because outdoors fitness suits me so much better than the gym.0
