The past 3 days I've been either hitting the mark or slightly under calories, carbs and fat, but seem to be going over on protein...I don't want to make myself crazy looking at these numbers every day, but does that make sense?? I'm eating lean meats - very protion controlled....not sure where I'm going wrong?

You're not going wrong unless you are eating a 1400 calorie a day diet and getting in 200 g of protein a day. I really believe that the protein consumption levels on MFP are set too low. I consistently go over by 10-40 grams of protein a day and I am doing protein powders, nf cottage cheese, turkey, chicken, etc.

A little more protein isn't going to kill you. As long as you are not grossly overdoing it, you'll be okay. Just keep your water intake up to help flush your kidneys so they don't get stressed too much.

How much over are you doing exactly? Your diary isn't viewable. Also, what's your weight? People more knowledgeable than I will need it to calculate the recomended amount of protein for you if you're doing any sort of strength training.

I am having the same issue with the protein, I am always over, however all other numbers are where they need to be. It seems like the protein should be higher, any suggestions?

LOL - My weight is kinda private, but I'm trying to lose 40 pounds...I do Pilates every night, and drink tons of water during the day. My protein is coming from healthy sources like lf cottage cheese, tuna, chicken, etc.

I've just started using the site today and was surprised that i'd gone 'over' on my protein. A quick googling gave this reasonably detailed response: http://exercise.about.com/cs/nutrition/a/protein_2.htm

I'm following Nutrisystem so Im well within their guidelines ...I went 23g over protein yesterday and I really didn't eat that much lolol
  • I too seem to be always over the protein levels. I only eat meat once a day - if that - and get most of my proteins from other sources. I've done some research on the effects of excess protien in the body - but as far as I can tell, healthy individuals who keep hydrated should not be too concerned. Though protein makes your kidneys work harder. I'm just keeping a record of what seems to be highest in protein in my diet and I think I'm just going to get rid of it - atleast once in a while.

How much is too much for you all? You're not producing numbers...what are your levels at (according to MFP), and how much are you going over? 5, 10, 20, 50 grams? Much needed information for those of us attempting to help.

Also, what workouts are you doing, if any?

To follow up on my previous post, according to the article conventianal wisdom would suggest that you should consume between .8 and 1.8 times your weight in kilos in grams of protein per day. Use the lower number if you're sedentary - as this site seems to do, and something towards the higher number if you're doing weights/endurance training.
I'm 102.6 kilos so 102.6 x .8 = 82grams, this site recommends I eat 88 grams, however I did a killer training session today so say multiply by 1.4 would give me 143 grams which is about right for today.
I don't think its an exact science ;)
  • I was about to ask this same question. I just started yesterday, but both days I am over on Protein and Fiber. Thanks for all the comments on this.

You CAN have too much protein. Try taking 1g of protein for every lb. of body weight. And your carb intake should increase along with the amount of water you consume.

20 - 23g Monday and Tuesday and according to MFP I only have 3 grams left today and I didn't eat dinner yet. I do Pilates daily and drink tons of water. Since I had so much success with Nutrisystem in the past I'm going to try and not read into the numbers too much - I know if I stick with it I'll lose weight, I just think its strange.
  • I don't eat meat, and have been going over my protein regularly. This thread really put my mind at ease. I was concerned.

    Thanks!

They are definitely set wayyyyyy too low, especially if your doing a workout routine
