Listen to your doctor, not your friend.

Put the time and work into getting the body you want and deserve.

People get stuck on numbers. I'd just lose weight until you feel you've reached a healthy weight. For me, I'm trying to keep as much muscle as possible so that I'm not skinny fat when I reach my goal. When I reach my goal, I may lose more weight if I still have visible fat around my stomach. If I were to get rid of that before I reach my goal, I'd stop. Just shoot for a healthy body.

I was told today by my best friend that because of my size I will NEVER be 130 and look healthy. I'm 5'7", and was told by my doctor that 130-135 is the best goal I could go for. Are there any ladies here that are 5'7" and are 130-135 lbs?? I hope my friend isn't just saying that cause she doesn't want me skinnier than her. I would hate for her to think that way, especially when her and I are suppose to be friends.....

It sounds on the lower side of realistic, I am 5' 5" and my doctor says I should be between 120 - 150, I am aiming for 125 lb
At the moment I am down from 215 lbs to 149 lbs and I've noticed that my friends that are heavier than me, all say ' you have lost enough, you don't need to lose anymore !! But my friends who are slimmer, all say carry on until I feel happy with the weight and size I feel comfortable with.

I'm 5'4" and I weigh 127lbs and people always tell me I look too thin - which I don't...I have a small frame so yes, I'm thin but I'm not skinny. I do think 130 for your hight might be borderline skinny.

I'm 5'7" and maintained between 130 and 135 for many years. I'm now sitting at 159 and wanting to get back down to 135, it looks great on me. I've been as low as 120 but that's too thin for my frame.

Like everyone else said I think you should just continue your journey and re-evaluate as you go along. Maybe 130 is not what you really want anyways.

130 lbs of muscle vs. 130 lbs of deprivation vs 130 lbs of fat = all different looks.

Agreed. And you know what is healthy for you.

It depends on your bone structure AND your BF%.

I'm 5'6" and just found out my BF% is 30. So I have 112 lbs of LBM, meaning if I maintain all my LBM I'd be 20% BF at 140. If I got to 130 (what I've always thought of as a "typical" weight for my height), I'd have a body fat % of 14.

So I can either adjust my GW or my LBM, and I know which one I'd rather change.

I'm 5ft 8 and at 140 I looked too skinny and people kept asking me if I was ill and I was freezing all the time. 154 looked awesome on me, I was slim, athletic with a few curves, really great for me. I have long arms and legs and broad shoulders.

20 years on. Will be glad to get to 170 from where I am at 181 and maybe eventually 160 but intentionally REALLY SLOWLY.

After years of yoyo diets I can now call myself a Permaloser having lost 50lbs and kept it off for a year so far. I'll never go back to my old bad habits.

I also go by body fat percentage. I am 27% right now. Never want to go below 22% as I'll look too skinny and being over forty I'll look more wrinkly!! Lol

I'm 5'7" and 125, size 4, but I am small-boned. I think my husband would've preferred that I stopped losing weight at a size 6 honestly, but I enjoy being this size and have been successfully maintaining for several months now.

I'm 5'7" and used to have my goal at 135. I just don't think it's realistic for me. Before my last pregnancy, I weighed 153.8 and wore a size 4 (US).

I quoted the above post for you to see how much body composition comes into play.

Weight is just one measure and not a very good one, at that, because it can fluctuate wildly for various reasons.

Who cares if you weigh more or less than your friend? Why does she care so much?

Don't get too hung up on the number on the scale. Go with how you look/feel/fit in clothes.

ETA that at almost 154 lbs I wore a size 4 (US) or a small/extra small in "non-vanity-sizing stores." I wore a 2 (and even a 0! or an XXS if they had it) in stores where sizing is a little more generous.

haven't read any of the other responses, but to reply to the OP's question I am roughly 5'7" and just under 130. For my frame size I look fine (confirmed by highly biased fiance), but I don't want to go too much lighter (just my opinion about what weight looks good for me)

One common shocker people have talked about in here is that the people who are closest to us sometimes sabotage our goal and efforts. Some times... some people will say... Ohh nooo. you don't need to lose weight... when you and your doctor already talked about it...... and my all time favorite is when someone very close decides to order pizza or offer you french fries knowing full well you are watching your food intake , carbs, etc.................That is why it is very helpful to find supportive strangers .. in myfitnesspal who will tell it like it is...... and support you in your journey..................So... if your doctor says it is okay to be a certain weight at a certain height, within guidelines of healthy eating and exercise................then do that...................and Live a happy life. :flowerforyou:

Going by weight alone is pretty pointless. There is a reason there is a healthy weight range. Different people look different at the same weight. I am 5'5 and 130 would be really skinny for me. At my leanest I was 140lbs and very tiny in the waist and lower bodyfat. There are women my size and taller than me who look really good at 130.
I do have a goal weight range because I know from past experience what I look like at that size, but I am also not totally hung up on the number either.

I wouldn't get hung up on a number. I also wouldn't assume she is saying that because she doesn't want you to be skinnier than her. She may just not realize how different we can carry weight and is basing your goal weight on her percieved notion of what 130 looks like. 130 is on the lower end of the range for 5'7 so it's not like she is totally out to left field.

Has your friend ever seen you at 130 lbs? If not, how would she (or anyone else) know what it would look like on you? And if she has, well, tough. It's your body, not hers.

Thank you everyone for your great insights :). I will take losing weight day to day, but just talking to her and how she came out with all that stuff just kind of floored me. I dunno, she is the competitive type too, that's why I work out at the gym without her now...lol...

I will definitely listen to my body and let it tell me when the right weight has come upon me. Thanks again everyone!!

130 lbs is fine. The medical recommendation for 5' 7" is 121 - 159 lbs. It's good to be on the lower end because then you can still gain a little weight (holiday season) and not worry about going over what's healthy. Also, the lower end has a lower body fat percentage which is better for your health in general.

I know people in real life who are competitive about weight loss. One I know rubs it in my face that she's only a few pounds heavier than I am but has been at it longer. However, I'm four inches taller with a totally different body shape, so we shouldn't be comparing (not that we should even if we were similar). I was like, "Oh, ok," like I didn't care (because I don't), and I could tell it got under her skin that I didn't get all defensive/competitive with her.

One thing I've learned in my own weight loss and search for fitness is that life is so much better when you focus on fitness, not just because the exercise does awesome things for your body and mind but also because the people I work out with are super supportive of each other. It's not about outdoing anyone but about doing the best YOU can and improving yourself. They are all also very positive people - and it's just so much nicer being around them than competitive, negative people who feel the need to build themselves up at your expense.

You're clearly in the right mindset :)

Do you. Hell with everyone else. You can be a skinnyfat 130lbs at a greater height than 5'7", or a super ripped muscular 130lbs at 5'0". Don't let your "friend" pooh pooh your goals.

I am 5'6" and I've been as low as 123 over the past 10 years. Once I get to around 145 people start asking me how much more I want to lose. Once I get to 132 I start looking a little too thin in my face. I think it is because I have high cheekbones so my face ends up looking a lot thinner than the rest of me.

You just do what you feel is the most healthy for your body. Don't listen to people that are only trying to rain on your parade. It's her problem, not yours.

My wife is 5' 7" and looks great at 124-125 (current weight). Her doctor has told her that weight is fine for her. At one time she was down to 118-119, but that was too skinny.

I agree with losing slowly until you're at a weight that you're happy with!

    Good luck!

I would listen to your doctor. I am 5'7", am currently 132 and definitely not "too skinny." My workouts are almost entirely strength-training and I eat around 1700 calories a day, so certainly not starving myself or killing it with cardio.

Same!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Currently 129 and body fat measures 20.4%.

    Calories between 1700-2000/day
Workout 4x/week for 70 minutes; very little cardio, mostly weights

I think it's really dangerous to get too hung up on numbers. I'm also 5'7, and my ultimate goal weight, my absolute sweet spot, is 160. Any thinner and I can't maintain. It feels unnatural for me to go below that, so I won't. But yeah, that's my body, not yours, and ultimately your only concern should be health and happiness. Can you comfortably maintain 130? Is it the weight you're strongest and healthiest at? If so, go for it. If you're just hung up on that number because of your doc or the BMI scale, play around and find your own sweet spot.

I'm 5'6.5 and 138. At 130 I looked somehow starved - with visible collar bones, hollow cheeks and thin wrists - and skinny. Clothes I wear now are the same I used to wear at 130 ( small size) but because I lift heavy my body looks shapely and fit. Scale nubmer is not everything.

5' 7" here and 132 lbs - only 2 more to lose before maintenance - but I am small boned (narrow wrists, thin fingers etc) I go by the mirror and look at overall proportions.

I'm 5'7" and 134 pounds currently in a size small and a 4/5 right now. I am currently getting those comments too, although my end goal is 130 pounds. I'm not too skinny, in fact I have a bit of that skinny fat thing going on which is why I just started lifting. I do agree with the other posters that said you do what you feel is right, you have the backing of a doctor and your goals won't put you under weight so go for it!
