I haven't lost nearly enough weight to be an expert on the topic, but I agree that it's largely just a difference in personal confidence. I've only lost 21 lbs & I can see it in myself already. My body hasn't changed THAT much, but it's enough to have me wearing clothes differently, walking differently, acting differently - & people have noticed. When you're overweight, you're incredibly hard on yourself. You judge yourself more than anyone else ever could. Someone might say something to you that is not at all about your weight, but you turn it into that. You often assume that everyone around you is thinking negative thoughts about you, constantly whispering behind your back to their friends about you and your weight, and it turns into a self-fulfilling prophecy type situation. That's not to say that legit fat-discrimination doesn't exist because it definitely does - it's rampant - but I still think 70% of the time WE are the ones doing the most judging of ourselves & assuming that others are doing the same.

society is highly fat phobic you are correct OP

    This...

And society is highly fit phobic as well.

It seems that my abs are now "manly" or "gross" or whatever now.

I think the problem is just that people want to think of themselves as better than others, and that often times means that they have to find something about other people that they don't like so they can have the illusion of being better...which they are not, but that's how they think.

Agreed. I can't imagine that I was the ONLY happy , outgoing ,confidant & friendly fat person on the planet.. I haven't changed at all. I am still the same as I always have been, there is just less of me.

People DO treat me differently. They hold doors more instead of letting them slam in my face. Women will include me in conversations about fashion or makeup tips or shoes (even though I am still NOT interested LOL ) When I was at my highest weight people would change the subject a lot - like fat girls don't shop...or eat normally. I'd go out for a nice dinner and people would stare at me while I was eating like "you don't need to eat that you fattie" Even if I hadn't had much to eat all day I was automatically a 'pig'. Funny that I eat MORE now when I go out than I ever did when I was fatter. No one ever says a word!

These days I have bigger biceps than a lot of guys I know so I am just waiting for them to start with the 'steroid jokes' ;p

When I got pregnant, I was sorely tempted to write a book titled "Fat people don't get pregnant" and each chapter was going to be me talking about a different thing that fat people apparently don't do (judging by the lack of suitable attire/facilities for larger people). As a fat pregnant woman, I couldn't find maternity clothes, so I had to buy bigger clothes. It took forever to find nursing bras (and the ones I found the first time around didn't actually fit, but they were better than nothing. Never did find nursing shirts though.

I am still morbidly obese, but I'm a heck of a lot closer to just obese than I was September 30th of last year, when I began changing my life. I have some time to go before I get things where I want them to be, but I look forward to, one day, being able to do the things I have not been able to do because of my size. (Amusement park rides this October, here I come.)

    Awesome job in your progress.

I've noticed this and I've never even been pregnant. I work in a clothing store that carries both regular women's clothing and maternity clothing. Women's knits and woven shirts go from XS-XL and pants go from 00-16 (inexplicably, woven dresses and skirts only go up to 12 or 14, and blazers only go to 12!). Maternity runs from XS-L and 0-14, and is meant to fit like your regular size. Apparently big-ish women (and extremely petite women) don't have babies.
(By "women's" here I mean "clothing for women" not "Women's sizes" as in plus sizes vs "Misses" for straight sizes.)

It all comes down to this...

If "you" are different than "me"... "I" will treat you differently

    where
"you" can be size related, height related, color related, age related, mental capacity related, gender related, etc etc etc

people pick on other people to make themselves feel better.
    good people don't do that
people who are confident in themselves don't do that
people who are secure in their own identity or "comfy in their own skin" don't do that

If you are experiencing discrimination, it is horrible... but it's almost even more tragic for the idiot who is doing the discriminating.. because they are too weak in themselves to be any better than they are.

No matter your size, shape, sexual preference, color, etc... Stand tall in who you are.

and pity the fool who tries to bring you down

It's not just this. It's not about being made fun of or people bringing you down, It's about real discrimination. Fat people are less likely to be hired or promoted at work. Juries give more lenient sentences to thin people. Hell there was a study that said parents will give more financial assistance to a fit than a fat child who is buying their first car ... The list goes on ...

It all has to do with people looking at a fat person and subconsciously (or consciously) assuming that they're weak willed, or lazy. And then they act accordingly.

Before I lost the majority of my weight I would often be stared at and when people did engage with me they never looked me in the eye or they were very short with me. Now I just blend in, no one is staring or laughing. Call it what you will but I think its just the fact that an overwhelming amount of people are just a-holes.

and the same can be said for discrimination against women in typical male roles, and males in typically female roles; younger aged professionals in an "older" profession; "older" professionals in a youthful organization; teenagers as it relates to driving, homosexuals as it relates to marriage, people of various religions...

I don't think that there is a person out there who hasn't experienced SOME sort of discrimination.

It's not just fat people that are targeted. I am not denying that there is fat phobia. It's there... in bed with a bazillion other phobias that trigger other forms of discrimination.

People physically run into me on the street. I think because they are so busy trying to avoid looking at me that they don't see me. It's not that they couldn't avoid running into me, this isn't in crowds. It's mind-boggling.

Very skinny people also suffer from discrimination. The other side of the coin being this: it's okay to verbally bash the thin in public, whereas if someone does that to the obese in public, the mob will come to the defense of the obese as that is immediately seen as discrimination.

My right boob is smaller than my left boob. I've always been left out of things because of it.

In general yes I do think fat people are discriminated against in many situations.

As for my personal experience...I have seen behavior that is all over the place when it comes to this issue.

I was hit on regularly when I weighed 260+ - I am still hit on, it's just by different guys. No better, no worse. I'm married so it is a moot point.

I was treated very kindly in the workplace and any little thing I did that was physical (lifting a file box, carrying stuff around the building) was practically applauded, like I was some kind of miracle worker for being healthy enough to do it. Now it seems like in the workplace (different job) people EXPECT me to be smart, because for my area/age I'm a very average sized woman. In stores people ask me to help them lift a bag of dog food or whatever, because I'm tall and clearly not disabled by weight. Still fat, but not a big obese person...I believe that I'm truly seen as "normal" now. Sometimes I actually feel the world is a bit colder to the average, normal person. I think some - actually MANY - people treated me with pity kindness!

The main area where I do see a difference of people treating me 'better' now is other women who are my peers...I'm 37 so let's say late twenties to late forties...I have always been a confident, smiley positive sort of woman and other women have always talked to me. But now they are more likely to take a special interest in me, want to hang out, friend me online, invite me to stuff (no sales parties tyvm!). That is where I've seen a big difference.

I very much have to agree with these comments; though in any of the jobs I've ever held, whether it be at a college, newspaper or call center, I've never seen a thin person considered more for advancement over an obese person. I've been passed over for positions for which I was vastly more qualified in favor of an obese person a number of times and I think it's for multiple reasons, not least of which is that the obese person may be seen as less likely to pursue other jobs (which was true, as they're still at the jobs which I left long ago, so maybe that is a form of discrimination but it's kind of reversed).

I agree. I've especially noticed this with men, opening doors, holding elevators, picking something up I dropped, etc. I'm still the same person I was 50 pounds ago, although I have noticed that I make eye contact and smile more now like some other folks are saying.

Also, thin/fit people are discriminated against by fat people.

More men want to get in your pants, what ever the reason.
    I wouldn't really call that 'discrimination' :).

in that case, perhaps yes, but there is quite a bit of 'thin' bashing out there.

It really is! Birds of a feather flock together, and if all that your friends ever want to do is go get chili cheese fries and beer, it will be pretty hard to stay fit if that's what you do with them. And then you have groups like NAAFA that want to make everyone fat. I'm glad I got far away from that lifestyle!
Sometimes it's as though people think fatness is contagious XD

I have been over 300 pounds and also underweight

I was treated infinitely more horrendously when overweight than I ever ever was when I was very very thin there is no comparison

As I have lost weight my apparent worth has gone up and it shows in the way people treat me compared to before. The smaller I get the "better" and more "acceptable" I seem to be to general society

fatphobia is 100% a thing and anyone who thinks otherwise needs to learn some things

Yea, it's because many think that fat people don't take care of their health and people associate that with poor character. Fit people and skinny people are discriminated against too... I don't know how many times I've seen a "curvy girls are better" type of thing - doesnt matter who you are, what you are.... someone isn't going to like you no matter what. So, don't be a victim.
