I'm new to the site and I love it already. I'm very excited to start shedding this baby weight. I have 3 kids. My youngest is 10 months old and still breastfeeding. Does anyone know how to calculate calories burned from breast feeding? Thanks!!!

I've always heard that you should add 500 calories in addition to your BMR for breastfeeding. Hope that helps!0

Doing a quick scan of sites from Google, here's what I found...
Breastfeeding burns an average of 500 calories a day, with the typical range from 200 to 600 calories burned a day.
Here's a link to one page: eHow.com http://www.ehow.com/about_4598063_many-do-burn-day-breastfeeding_.html#ixzz1ACZgqW6h0 -
I just added breastfeeding into my "exercise" category. It does burn around 500 calories an hour. Your body burns 20 calories per every OUNCE of milk it produces...pretty amazing, huh?! Congrats for making such an awesome decision for you and your baby!!0

You can go to your food diary and add "breastfeeding." It adds negative calories to your food..so you end up with more calories to consume....Good Luck!!0

Hi there !
I was breastfeeding too, I stopped a few weeks ago. While I don't know how much calories you should add, I'd just like to share my experience on diets, work outs and breasfeeding : my milk supply took a real nose dive when I started cutting off the calories and the fat in my meals and snacks... And I put off working out, it was killing my back even with the best support bra I could find at the time :noway:
So I wish you good luck and hope you won't have the same experience as me0 -
Seems like you've gotten all the answers you need, but I had to add one thing: what an adorable baby!0

If you want to keep breastfeeding you really can't cut calories. You need about 500 calories extra on top of your maintenance calories. If you start cutting calories you risk hurting your milk supply and you also risk hurting the quality of your milk. Your body will take care of itself first, not your baby. So it will give you the nutrition you need and will give whatever it can, even if it's not enough, to your breastmilk. Do not cut calories and definitely eat all of your exercise calories to maintain the quality of your milk.0 -
