Cardio: burns calories.
Cardio burns a lot of calories at the time it is done. Strength training builds muscle that burns calories while resting.

I just started with mostly cardio (lots of walking) to lose weight. I eventually noticed that when I cut my cardio down and began adding weights, my body shape began changing and the scale less. Basically, seems they go hand in hand eventually.
