Importance of Vitamin D

I'm not a milk drinker and I take a multivitamin but it only has 200 mg Vitamin D3 in it. I was reading online that if you are Vitamin D deficient, you won't lose weight. After 40 days on MFP and the scales never moving (although I was losing some inches), I started taking 2000 mg of D3, 4x a day and now the scales is finally starting to move! Is there a connection or after 40 days was it the timing? Caution - YOU CAN OVER take Vitamin D and have to watch but I know from what I eat and not being outside that I had to be low. Once I can start getting outside in the sun more, I will cut back. I'm just curious if anyone else has experienced this?

Lack of vitamin D has issues for osteoporosis and in extreme deficiency in childhood for rickets - but have never heard of any link to weight loss.
Can't see how it could possibly have this effect.0 -
That's interesting! I need to check into this. Thanks! :happy:0

I can definitely attest to the importance of vitamin D! Last year I was sent to a thyroid specialist because I was losing my hair badly and I was always cold and tired even though I was eating healthy and losing weight at a healthy pace. My symptoms mimicked hypothyroidism but my blood work came back normal. The specialist was quick to diagnose my problem as a severe vitamin D deficiency. After three months on a high dose of vitamin D my hair loss stopped and I started feeling better. During that time I was still losing weight though so I am not sure on the weight loss correlation.0

vitamin D deficiency can jack with your metabolism due to it causes hormonal imbalances. These imbalances can also lead to a number of other health issues. If you think you are deficient you should get some blood work done to be sure. A lot of people are deficient in vitamin D because they lack dietary fat in their diets...vitamin D is fat soluble and thus requires dietary fat to be absorbed. Also get some sunshine.
I am vitamin D deficient despite getting plenty of sunshine and having plenty of dietary fat in my diet...I take 5,000 IU daily. You should get checked before supplementing though as it is possible to have vitamin D toxicity as well if you over do it.0 -
I love getting the D everyday... :drinker: :smokin:0

Thanks for posting this. I take a calcium supplement that has some Vitamin D in it, but don't know how much I'm truly getting. A deficiency may explain some of my symptoms that were mentioned by another poster (Sweetnlow)--as well as being stalled in my weight loss. I'm going to look into this further. :flowerforyou:0

A lot of people are borderline Vit D deficient. If you are concerned, get your serum levels checked. Vit D helps absorption and regulates Calcium and Phosphorus in the body, among other things (Mg and Fe pretty sure), Most people know what Ca is good for, but P is essential for energy exchanges inside the cell body and for taking care of your body tissue. That might answer the weight loss question. People with normal levels of Vit D do tend to maintain their weight more easily (or are capable of losing properly).
Vit D is also related to cholesterol levels. Vit D is metabolized into cholesterol, which is responsible for making hormones. So a too low cholesterol can also go along with a Vit D deficiency and a normal cholesterol level is really important for cell wall integrity and the ability of the cell to communicate with it's neighbors. (This is part of the reason the low fat diet fad was such a disaster.) So you don't have to take a supplement to get Vit D-just make sure you are getting enough cholesterol in your diet. Or, my doctor told me last year when my D levels were below 10 (the lowest they should be is 30 in blood serum) 15 minutes a day three times a week of direct sunlight on bare skin is a safe way to get Vit D.
I encourage you, and others who think they might have the same problem, to go to your doctor and get your levels checked regularly.0 -

Not all greek yogurts have Vitamin D so you should check the label to see.
