Extra long hair and working out?

This is my go-to for when I'm doing anything strenuous and need to keep my hair out of my face and off my neck.
1) Put hair up into a high pony-tail
2) braid hair
3) wrap braid around base of pony tail and secure with two hair ties
4) use a bandana or headband to keep fly-aways from bothering me
^This. It's a pain but it keeps it out of the way.0 -
If it's not floor stuff, I swear by spin pins. They're these nifty little spiral shaped pins by Goody and it takes two of those to hold a bun in place that won't be moved by any kind of wind, as opposed to 10000000000000000000000000000 bobby pins. :P0

This, and military sock bun. Although with hair that long, I doubt you need the sock.0 -
Pretty much what everyone sez here. My only contribution is "I hate you all for having thick hair." :grumble: I had hair down to my butt and the WORST braid taper, ha! After cutting it all to about 1" all round my head, it's back down to bra-strap length, and I'm probably gonna keep it there. For all that it's superfine, at least it grows fast.0

My hair is pretty long too. It is a couple of inches from my butt. I do a half-pulled through pony tail. I don't have any pictures of my hair but I found this one online.

Your boyfriend should run behind you and hold your hair!0

My hair is very long and heavy, and I make a ponytail, then build a bun. I swear by Spin Pins: three of the regular size ones will hold my hair through any workout, including swimming.
This! Although it doesn't work as well for cycling because of the helmet (or triathlon, due to the cycling part)....my hair's not quite as long as some of yours (just below my shoulder blades), but it is crazy thick and stupid heavy....French braids are AWESOME for tris, but sadly, I'm not talented enough to French braid my own hair (and can only do loose ones on other people)....so I'm still trying to find my best option for tris (and cycling)....and also when riding the motorcycle for that matter.0 -
My hair is almost to my tailbone too, and I always wear a normal braid without making a ponytail first. Everything else annoys the *kitten* out of me.
If I wear a high ponytail braided or not, my scalp hurts like crazy and my hair is extremely tangled post-workout. And a bun never holds in place, no matter what I do. I think my hair is just too soft and slippery.0 -
Mine was about to the middle of my back and I finally had to chop it off because my swim cap was coming off and that I just cannot accept. For regular stuff, I put it up in a ponytail, then cover that in a hat. It worked great.0

My hair is currently about four inches past my bra band and it's gotten too heavy to stay in a ponytail while running and it's just annoying and in the way while lying on a bench to lift or when I've got the bar on my back for squats. I put it in two braids, one on each side, and that works really well to keep it out of my way and it's not all lumpy while lifting. I look like an idiot and have been called Pippi Longstocking and Swiss Miss girl by my friends, but whatever. It also doesn't pull on my scalp and make my head hurt that way.
I'm also helpless when it comes to hair, so that's pretty much the most complicated thing I can do. French braiding is way beyond my skills.0 -
Braid or bun. Sometime a pony tail knot, which I think is cute (if I'm racing or something ) and makes the pony tail quite a bit shorter.0

My hair isn't 'extra long' but long enough that a ponytail can get annoying - I tend to put it in a bun - put hair in a ponytail, twist and wrap around base of ponytail then secure with a band - you may need a couple of bands and a few pins for yours?! If I'm doing a workout video or something where I'll have to lie down halfway through I take out the band holding the bun in place and leave it as a ponytail so I can lay my head down - or use the bun as a little pillow!0

I have varied success with this (usually works best when my hair is wet), but I usually pull all my hair up like I'm going to put it in a ponytail, and then just twist until it twists over itself to become a bun. Then I use a combination of a couple of hair ties and a bobby pin or two as needed to keep it in place. I have very fine hair, though, so it tends to slip. It might work better if your hair type is more coarse than mine (which wouldn't be very difficult).
Also, the braid into a bun thing is awesome and always works. I'm just normally too lazy to take the time. My suggestion is french braid to keep it anchored and then turn that into your bun.
ETA: Diagonal dutch braid is another go-to for me. There are tutorials on youtube. You can also do it as a french braid but the dutch braid gets me compliments!0 -

SOMEONE WHO UNDERSTANDS ME! I have a lot of hair, it's fairly thick, but because it's so fine, it REALLY doesn't look like it.0 -

For layered hair you might want to do two so you can get those shorter hairs on the sides fully in.
