Anyone good at identifying really exotic dishes?

I'll be going to Chicago in a few weeks. The last time I went, we went to this great Chinese dim sum place. The order sheets were all in Chinese and we just asked people sitting near us what we should order. The food was amazing but none of us had any idea what it was. It didn't look like typical Americanized Chinese dishes. Things had a darker, smokies flavor and there was no oyster sauce anywhere.

Anyway, when I go back well likely go to a restaurant like this again. If I take halfway decent pics, would anyone out here feel somewhat confident in identifying the dishes? I think I better just give up tracking that weekend, but I'd like to make an effort. Who knows? The database here is pretty huge. Maybe I'll find the dishes in the food database if I only knew what they were!

Post the pictures here and see. There are a lot of foodies, cooks/chefs, and such about on MFP and from all over the place so it's a good possibility they could.

And have you checked if the restaurant has a website? Some sites might actually have the menu as part of their reviews on the restaurant too.

I always try to identify what is *in* the food. The database is massive, but it only knows so much, and tracking food from a small restaurant becomes something of a challenge to me. Try to pick out portions, foods, and some sauces. It's better than you estimate than go for the cookie cutter MFP food options.
  • Though I echo the idea of just don't track for the day, I'd be more than happy to identify the Chinese dishes. Unless you're not going to go for Chinese food. If so, I will just sit silently and salivate at the food porn.

ETA: If you do really need me, just send me a PM.

I'm not Chinese/can't speak/read it, but maybe if you get someone to show you the name of the dish on the menu and take a picture of that someone who can read Chinese could translate that for you? Maybe photograph both the menu and the dish and see what happens?!
