Racer back or regular?

(Sorry if this isn't the best place for this...)
So, I was looking through a basket of stuff that has been sitting for years, since we moved, and I decided to throw the contents out (donate, recycle etc.) because I hadn't even looked at it for so long. I found... A racer back bra, not a sports bra, with tags, in a size I could never have worn for so many years. I tried it on and dang, it is supportive and fits better than the bras I was currently wearing.
So, question for anyone with experience...are racer backs in general better at getting things up where they should be than your traditional bra? I was wearing a 42 DD, this is a 42DDD, maybe that is it? I am wondering if I should just buy some racer backs and I have no idea if this particular style is still made...it could be years and years old. I plan on doing a proper fitting when I am closer to goal. My usual bras leave something to be desired in the "lift" department, and feeding 3 babies and losing some weight...it ain't purty...
