cardio.. high heart rate

at the gym i usually do 30-45 mins of machines and weights followed by 20 mins of cardio.. when i do cardio i try and push myself and not take it super easy… my heart rate gets pretty high.. like 185-195. when it gets that high i slow down and let it gat back down to about 170.. i know that it will get better if i keep going (which is the plan).. just wondering if that is way too high or if its ok to get that high :)

According to the charts I have seen you would working at Maximum Effort for you age and should not stay at this rate for more than a couple of minutes at a time. If you google "heart rate charts" you will find some generic information and charts that may be of use to you.
  • i know its pretty high for my age.. if i want to keep it at the right levels i basically hav to just walk.. and i don't feel like I'm working out hard enough :/

Ignore the "right levels" - if it's comfortable to work out at that intensity and you have a healthy heart (and no doctor has advised against high intensity exercise), it's fine.

The problem is those charts are often pretty inaccurate. There are ways you can determine your own max HR. I keep meaning to get around to testing that but for now, I go by effort. My regular effort can put me pretty close to my "max HR". I have pushed much harder than that so I am pretty certain it is not accurate for me. I go by percieved exertion for now.
